💜 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT #11 – BIPOLAR SCOTLAND 💜

Tonight we’re shining our Community Spotlight on Bipolar Scotland – Scotland’s national charity supporting people living with bipolar, as well as their families, friends and carers.

One of the things we really want to highlight is that you don’t need to face bipolar alone. Bipolar Scotland provides free support, information and opportunities to connect with people who understand through lived experience.

💚 What support is available?

Bipolar Scotland offers:

💬 Peer Support Groups – safe and welcoming spaces to meet others, share experiences and feel understood.

📍 West Lothian has its own IN-PERSON peer support group, usually running from 7–9pm. Contact Bipolar Scotland or check their website for the next local date.

📖 Self-Management Training – helping people understand bipolar, recognise patterns and develop ways of managing their wellbeing.

🤝 Beyond Diagnosis – up to six months of one-to-one support for people who have recently received a bipolar diagnosis.

💼 Momentum Works – peer support around employment, studying, volunteering or returning to work.

👨‍👩‍👧 Support for family, friends and carers – because bipolar can affect the people around us too.

🏢 Training & Awareness – helping workplaces and organisations better understand bipolar and create supportive environments.

And importantly, you do not need a bipolar diagnosis to attend their peer support groups. Family members, friends and carers are welcome too.

💜 Membership is FREE.

🌟 COME AND MEET BIPOLAR SCOTLAND!

We’re delighted that Bipolar Scotland will be attending West Lothian Mental Health Day. Come along, meet the team, ask questions and find out more about the support available.

💜 LEDS - Lothian Eating Disorders Service 💜

Tonight, we’re shining our 10th Community Spotlight on LEDS – Lothian Eating Disorders Service, the specialist community eating disorder service supporting adults aged 18+ across Lothian, including West Lothian.

Eating disorders can affect anyone. They don’t have a particular look, body shape, weight, gender or background — and you don’t have to wait until things feel severe before speaking to someone about your concerns.

💚 What support can LEDS provide?

Support is tailored to the individual and can include:

• Specialist assessment and care planning
• Psychological therapies
• Dietetic assessment and support
• Medical and psychiatric support
• Practical help around eating, body image and everyday life
• Support for families and carers

➡️ How do you access LEDS?

LEDS is not a self-referral service. If you’re concerned about your eating, relationship with food or body image, speak to your GP or another healthcare professional. They can talk through your concerns and, where appropriate, refer you to LEDS.

👀 HAVE YOU NOTICED OUR COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHTS?

Over the last few weeks, we’ve started shining a spotlight on some of the brilliant organisations joining us for this year’s West Lothian Mental Health Day — and we’ve barely scratched the surface! 💚

So far, we’ve shared 8 Community Spotlights…

⭐ 46 organisations are already confirmed
⭐ More may still be joining us
⭐ AND our wonderful holistic therapists will be getting their own spotlights too!

This is our third year running West Lothian Mental Health Day and, with the incredible response we’ve had so far, it’s shaping up to be our biggest one yet! 🎉

And what a variety of support we’re bringing together.

Whether you’re looking for help for yourself, a child or young person, a family member, an older person or someone you care about, you’ll be able to meet organisations offering support and advice around:

💜 Mental health & wellbeing
🧒 Children, young people & youth services
👨‍👩‍👧 Parenting & families
👴 Older people
🎖️ Veterans
🫶 Su***de prevention & support
🌱 Addiction & recovery
💗 Women’s support
💼 Employment & education
💷 Benefits, money & financial advice
🥫 Food & practical support
🏥 NHS & community mental health services
…and much more.

And that's exactly why we're doing these Community Spotlights.

We want people across West Lothian to know what support exists, who provides it and how to access it — because sometimes finding the right door to knock on is the hardest part.

📅 MONDAY 12 OCTOBER 2026

Keep watching for our next Community Spotlight — there are plenty more to come! 👀

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT NUMBER 8:
💚💗CYRENIANS OPAL 💗💚

This morning we’re shining our Community Spotlight on OPAL – Opportunities for Active Lives, a fantastic Cyrenians service supporting people aged 60+ across West Lothian.

💬 Because loneliness isn’t “just” loneliness.

Long-term loneliness and social isolation can have a very real impact on both our mental and physical health. For some people, losing regular contact with others can mean losing confidence, becoming increasingly isolated and finding it harder and harder to reconnect.

Sometimes, one conversation really can be the beginning of something better. ❤️

That’s where OPAL comes in.

They help people across West Lothian to build connections, regain confidence and stay involved in their communities through:

🤝 One-to-one support and befriending
👥 Social and activity groups
🚶 Walking groups
💻 Digital support
🌱 Help to reconnect with the community
🙋 Volunteering opportunities

OPAL is free and available to people aged 60+ living in West Lothian.

You can self-refer, ask someone to refer you, or simply pop along to one of their community groups — no referral is needed for the groups.

⭐ AND THERE’S MORE…

We’re delighted that OPAL will be joining us at our Mental Health Day on Monday 12 October! 💚

So if you’d like to find out what’s happening locally, meet the people behind the service or simply have a chat, come along and say hello.

And if someone came to mind while you were reading this, perhaps today is the day to give them a call. ❤️

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
💜 NEIL’S HUGS FOUNDATION 💜

As we count down to West Lothian Mental Health Day on Monday 12 October, we’re shining our Community Spotlight on Neil’s Hugs Foundation, who will be joining us on the day.

Neil’s Hugs was founded by Donna Paterson-Harvie following the devastating loss of her son, Neil William Paterson, to su***de in 2011. From that loss came a determination to provide hope, understanding and support to others affected by su***de and poor mental health. 💜

Today, Neil’s Hugs offers a range of support including a Listening Ear, one-to-one support, peer and social groups, su***de-bereavement support, befriending and signposting to help people find the right support for them.

Support can be accessed directly through Neil’s Hugs, and students and staff at West Lothian College can also drop into their weekly Cuppa & Chat ☕ sessions during term time.

Whether you need someone to listen, some extra support, or simply help finding the right service, Neil’s Hugs offers a welcoming, confidential and non-judgemental space.

💜 Come along to West Lothian Mental Health Day on Monday 12 October to meet the Neil’s Hugs team, find out more about what they offer and discover the support available within our local community.
