Chakras
My interest in chakras began when I read a book on reflexology. It introduced me to the concept of meridians, or channels of energy known as "Chi," which can be manipulated for healing. This idea is also found in practices like Shiatsu and acupuncture.
To draw on the willow tree analogy once more, the human body has a complex network of nerves, veins, and arteries, much like a tree's root system. Nerves transmit signals that allow us to sense our environment and coordinate body movements. Arteries circulate oxygenated blood, while veins return deoxygenated blood to the lungs. This intricate system illustrates the body's capability to carry energy through various forms. As electrochemical beings, we see the manifestation of this energy, which the Chinese call "Chi."
What are Chakras?
Chakras are energy centers naturally situated within the body. Each chakra serves distinct functions and contributes to the body's overall energy flow.
The Importance of Chakras in Tai Chi
Tai Chi promotes good posture and precise body alignment, influencing everything down to the skeletal level. It encourages natural, deep breathing, which enhances blood oxygenation. Through partner exercises and solo practice, Tai Chi develops your sense of touch and awareness of efficient and coordinated movement, fostering innate strength within the muscles.
With correct posture and fluid movement, the chakras, which align with the body's central line or spine, are naturally balanced, cleansed, and energized. The controlled movement and natural breath foster the flow and harmony of these energy centers.
Chakra Locations and Functions

Each chakra has a distinct energy and function that contributes to our overall well-being. Tai Chi, through its emphasis on balance, posture, and breath, helps maintain the harmonious flow of energy through these vital centres.
