🤔 Ever wondered when your little one will pick a favourite hand?

Here’s when hand dominance usually reveals itself - and why it matters!

👶🏻 0–12 months: No preference yet - babies are busy exploring with both hands.

✋🏻 1–2 years: You might spot a leaning, but it’s common to switch hands.

🥄 2–4 years: A consistent preference begins to shine through - drawing, feeding, playing.

🖊️ By age 5–6: Most children in the UK show a clear dominant hand, just in time for primary school!

🤔 Did you know?
• Around 90% of people are right-handed
• Only 10% are lefties - and they’re more likely to be creative thinkers!
• True ambidexterity (using both hands equally well) is very rare - only about 1% of the population.

✨ Top tip: If your child shows a very strong preference before age 1 - or avoids using one hand - it’s a good idea to check in with a health visitor or GP. Early support can make all the difference.

🤒 A normal temperature in babies and children is about 36.4C, but this can vary slightly. A fever is usually considered to be a temperature of 38C or above.

👶🏻 Your baby may have a high temperature if they:

- feel hotter than usual to touch on their forehead, back or stomach
- feel sweaty or clammy
- have flushed cheeks

✅ If you think your baby has a temperature, it's best to check with a thermometer.

🌡️ Ideally, you need a digital under arm thermometer to get a fast, accurate reading.

✅ You can buy these online or from pharmacies and most large supermarkets.

To take your child's temperature:

- Hold them comfortably on your knee and put the thermometer in their armpit – always use the thermometer in the armpit with children under 5 years to get the most accurate reading.

- Gently, but firmly, hold their arm against their body to keep the thermometer in place for however long it says in the manufacturer's instructions – usually about 15 seconds.

- The display on the thermometer will then show your child's temperature.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, you should get an accurate reading.

🌼 There are a few things that can slightly alter the reading – if your child has been:

- wrapped up tightly in a blanket
- in a very warm room
- very active
- cuddling a hot water bottle
- wearing a lot of clothes
- having a bath

🆒 If so, allow them to cool down for a few minutes, but do not let them get cold or shivery, then take their temperature again to see if there's any change.

✅ Send this with someone who might find it useful!

1️⃣ Check before you visit – always check it’s convenient to visit. Don’t just turn up.

2️⃣ Stay home if you’re unwell – even a mild cold can be dangerous for a newborn. Wait until you’re feeling better.

3️⃣ Wash your hands – clean hands help protect little ones from germs before cuddles.

4️⃣ Don’t kiss the baby – kisses can spread viruses that are harmless to adults but serious for babies.

5️⃣ Keep visits short – new parents and babies need plenty of time to rest and recover.

6️⃣ Respect feeding time – feeding comes first. Be patient and give them the space they need.

7️⃣ Make the tea – put the kettle on, bring snacks, or help with the washing up. Small acts make a big difference. Don’t expect to be waited on.

8️⃣ Skip the advice – unless they ask, keep opinions to yourself. Let them figure this out in their own time.

9️⃣ Offer practical help – fold some laundry, empty the dishwasher, or pick up a few useful bits from the shop. Help is the best gift.

🤰🏻 The exact cause of pre-eclampsia isn’t known however it’s thought it occurs when there’s a problem with the placenta.

‼️ Most people only experience mild symptoms but if it isn’t treated it can lead to serious complications for both mum and baby so it’s important it is diagnosed and monitored.

According to the NHS, the earlier symptoms of pre-eclampsia are present the more severe the condition will be.

Other factors that can slightly increase the risk include:

🌼 a family history of pre-eclampsia
🌼 if you’re aged over 40
🌼 it’s been more than 10 years since your last pregnancy
🌼 if you are expecting multiple babies
🌼 if your BMI is 35 or higher

If you have 2 or more of these together your chances are higher.

🚨 If you’re diagnosed with pre-eclampsia you’ll be referred to a specialist at hospital where they’ll do further tests to see how severe it is.

👶🏻 Pre-eclampsia will only be cured by giving birth to your baby, so you’ll be monitored closely until it’s possible to deliver your baby. You’ll need to attend regular appointments so you can be monitored and in severe cases you may need to be admitted to hospital.

👶🏻 Breath-holding is when a baby or child stops breathing for up to 1 minute and may faint. It can happen when a child is frightened, upset, angry, or has a sudden shock or pain. It’s usually harmless but can be scary for parents, particularly when it happens for the first time.

Breath-holding episodes:

✅ usually last for less than 1 minute (if the child faints, they'll usually regain consciousness within 1 or 2 minutes)
✅ are not epileptic seizures

🫶🏼 Your child is not doing it on purpose and cannot control what happens when they have a breath-holding episode.

Call 999 if:
🚑 faints and cannot be woken up
🚑 is shaking or jerking because of a fit
🚑 is blue or grey

‼️ These could be symptoms of breath-holding, but could also be related to other, more serious conditions. If a doctor has not previously told you it's breath-holding, it's important to get it checked immediately.

⚠️ See a GP if your child has already been diagnosed with breath-holding and:

🌼 has breath-holding episodes more often than before or the episodes seem worse
🌼 is stiff or shakes for longer than a minute and takes a while to recover
🌼 has breath-holding episodes that are affecting everyday life

❤️ The GP will try to find out if there's a more serious underlying condition. They may suggest an ECG to check your child's heart rhythm.

🤰🏻 Expecting a little one this August?

👶🏻 Their birthstone is the vibrant peridot and their birth flowers are the gladiolus and poppy — symbols of strength and imagination.

🦁 They’ll be either a bold Leo or a practical Virgo, depending on when they arrive.

TAG a parent-to-be who's expecting their August baby!

🧸 If your toddler throws the toy across the room, pours their water on the floor, or up ends the bowl of food you’ve just spent hours preparing, it’s not because they’re “naughty” — it’s because their brain is still very much under construction.

🧠 The part of the brain that controls impulses — the prefrontal cortex — isn’t fully developed until the mid-20s!

👶🏻 For small children, it’s like having a car with a powerful engine (big feelings!) but very weak brakes (self-control).

🧪 So when they act before they think, it’s not defiance — it’s biology.

Our job isn’t to expect perfection, but to teach, guide, and be the “borrowed brakes” until theirs get stronger.

🧘🏻‍♀️ Next time you see an impulsive moment, try this: pause, breathe, and remember — they’re learning how to steer.
