Some families prefer a carefully structured arrangement. Others are drawn to something looser, more seasonal and closer to the feeling of a garden.

There is no correct style.

The flowers might reflect a favourite season, colours someone loved or the natural landscape around a place that mattered to them.

What matters is that the tribute feels connected to the person rather than selected simply because it is traditional.

Having a local office means there is somewhere you can visit when you need clear answers, time to think or a private conversation about what comes next.

There is no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what you need.

Before a funeral begins, there are practical details being checked quietly in the background.

The team needs to be ready. The hearse and equipment need to be positioned correctly. Everyone needs to understand the route, timing and their responsibilities.

The aim is not for families to notice that work.

It is for the day to feel calm, respectful and properly cared for from beginning to end.

That level of preparation matters to me because every family deserves our full attention.

For someone who served, a flag can hold layers of meaning.

It may represent identity, duty, pride, shared experience and a part of life that remained important to them and their family.

Including it should never feel like decoration added for effect.

It should feel considered, appropriate and connected to the person being remembered.

I will always take the time to understand why a particular symbol matters and how the family would like it included.

Not everyone who matters will always be able to attend in person.

Someone may live overseas, be receiving medical care, have limited mobility or be unable to travel at short notice.

Where suitable arrangements are available, a professionally managed live stream can help them watch privately and remain connected to the service.

Technology should never become the focus of the day.

It should work quietly in the background so that distance does not automatically mean exclusion.

Following Robert Bush’s 20-year sentence at Hull Crown Court, our thoughts remain with the families affected by his crimes and the wider Hull community.

We made a conscious decision to wait until the hearing concluded before commenting, allowing us to consider the full proceedings, victim impact statements and final sentencing remarks.

We hope the sentence provides some measure of justice, although it cannot undo the harm caused.

We’re calling for proportionate regulation covering every funeral provider, with licensing, professional standards, accountability and independent inspection.

As an NAFD member we already choose oversight through inspections, the UK Funeral Director Code and an independent complaints process.

For me, supporting the Armed Forces community should be something practical, not simply a statement displayed on a wall.

It means recognising the experiences of serving personnel, veterans and their families.

It means listening carefully when service, rank, tradition or military identity needs to be reflected in a funeral.

And it means ensuring that those conversations are handled with understanding and respect.

Not every floral tribute needs to come from a standard page in a brochure.

Sometimes an object, hobby or interest immediately reminds everyone of the person being remembered.

A guitar. A football shirt. A favourite animal. Something connected to their work or a place they loved.

I work with experienced florists who can help turn those ideas into something fitting and personal.

It is often these details that make people look at a tribute and say, “That was completely them.”
