Clinical Trial: Oral CBD Dosing Reduces Pericarditis Pain and Recurrences

Rochester, MN: The twice-daily administration of an oral formulation of purified CBD reduces pericarditis (chest) pain and recurring inflammation, according to Phase II clinical trial data published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio assessed the safety and efficacy of orally administered CBD in 27 patients with recurrent pericarditis. Investigators assessed participants’ pain at baseline and following eight weeks of treatment. Some patients opted to continue using CBD for an additional 18 weeks.

Patients’ pericarditis pain scores fell 3.7 points on average (on a 10-point pain scale) following eight weeks of treatment. Over the full 26 weeks, patients’ pain scores fell 4.3 points on average. Seventy-one percent of patients who took CBD for the entire length of the trial remained free from pericarditis recurrence. Study participants were also able to reduce their use of prescription medications during the trial.

“In symptomatic patients with recurrent pericarditis, treatment with pharmaceutically manufactured cannabidiol resulted in reductions in pericarditis pain and systemic inflammation,” the study’s authors concluded. “The majority of patients remained free of recurrence during the extension period with weaning and discontinuation of background pericarditis medications. … Overall, these findings support larger, definitive randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of pharmaceutically manufactured cannabidiol in pericarditis.”

Clinical Trial: THC/CBD Formulation Reduces Alzheimer’s-Induced Agitation

London, United Kingdom: The oral administration of a standardized formulation of THC and CBD significantly reduces agitation in patients with late-stage Alzheimer’s disease, according to clinical trial data presented last week at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London.

Researchers assessed the efficacy of the cannabis intervention versus a placebo in a cohort of 120 hospice patients with advanced Alzheimer’s-induced dementia. After 12 weeks, agitation eased for nearly 90 percent of patients receiving treatment.

“These trial results were extremely impressive and showed a level of response not seen before in clinical trials related to dementia,” the study’s co-lead investigator said. “Rarely do we see close to 90 percent of patients in a trial respond positively to a new medication.”

The trial’s findings are consistent with those of other studies assessing the efficacy of cannabis-based interventions in patients suffering from AD-induced agitation. According to a recent meta-analysis of seven randomized clinical trials, “cannabinoid-based therapies showed lower neuropsychiatric symptom and agitation scores than placebo in patients with moderate-to-severe AD.”

Nearly 9 in 10 patients with late-stage dementia improved after 12 weeks of treatment with cannabis, the results of a first-of-its-kind study have shown.

The study found that cannabis oil made from a combination of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) can swiftly and significantly reduce agitation in dementia patients better than a placebo after two weeks of treatment, and sustain the reduction for the duration of the 12-week study.

“We now have evidence supporting a new and very effective treatment approach for agitation that may be appropriate for people in the final stages of dementia at the end of life, offering them grace and peace in what is often an extremely difficult time for patients and their families.”
