Trauma doesn’t just change what happened to you… it can change what your nervous system needs.

One of the biggest myths we hear is…

“I should be over this by now.”

Says who?

Trauma isn’t a sign of weakness.
It’s your nervous system doing its very best to keep you safe after something that once wasn’t.

That might mean you need more sleep.
More time before you trust.
Gentler movement instead of pushing through.
A quiet night instead of another social event.
A pause before responding in an argument.

And here’s the important bit…

Needing those things doesn’t mean you’re broken.
It means your brain and body have adapted to survive.

Healing isn’t about becoming the person you were before the trauma.

It’s about becoming the person you choose to be now… with compassion instead of criticism.

So if your healing journey looks different from someone else’s…

Good.

You’re not meant to heal like everyone else.

You’re meant to heal like you. 💚

The meaning of life is to give life a meaning.

Read that again.

So many people spend years asking,
“What’s my purpose?”
“What am I meant to be doing?”
“When will I finally feel fulfilled?”

But what if there isn’t one meaning waiting to be discovered?

What if… you get to create it?

Every conversation.
Every act of kindness.
Every boundary you finally hold.
Every fear you face.
Every time you choose growth over comfort.

That’s meaning.

Therapy reminds us that meaning isn’t found in events… it’s the meaning we choose to give them that shapes our lives.

Your past doesn’t get the final say.
Neither do your mistakes.
Or your age.
Or other people’s opinions.

You get to decide what this chapter means.

So stop waiting for life to hand you purpose wrapped in a pretty bow.

Go out and create it.

And while you’re at it… make it one that makes your future self smile💚

We spend so much of our lives waiting…

“I’ll do it when I’ve lost the weight.”
“I’ll book the holiday next year.”
“I’ll wear the nice outfit for a special occasion.”
“I’ll tell them how I feel… tomorrow .”

But here’s the thing…

Your brain loves the illusion of “later.”

Later feels safe.
Later feels sensible.
Later often never comes.

So eat the nice meal.
Book the trip.
Wear the outfit.
Take the photo.
Dance like nobody’s judging (because most people are too busy worrying about themselves anyway 😉).

Tell the people you love that you love them.

And while you’re at it… stop treating yourself like you’re at the bottom of your own priority list.

You are not here simply to survive until the weekend, the holiday, retirement or “when life calms down.”

You’re here to live.

Collect memories, not regrets.
Collect glimmers, not just goals.
And if people think you’re a wee bit too much…

Find people who think you’re just enough.

Life’s too short to live as a supporting character in your own story 💚

It’s never too late to be who you might have been. 💚

Read that again.

Not the version of you who never made mistakes.
Not the version who got everything right.
The version of you who finally lets go of the stories that were never yours to carry.

“I’m too old.”
“I’m too damaged.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“I’m too much.”
“I’m not enough.”

Those aren’t facts.
They’re beliefs… often picked up from other people’s words, painful experiences, or moments when you forgot your own worth.

As counsellors we don’t spend our day “fixing” people.
We help them clear out the mental clutter that’s been taking up space for years, so the person they’ve always been can finally breathe.

Because healing isn’t about becoming someone else.
It’s about letting go of everything that convinced you that you couldn’t.

And here’s the wee reminder you might need today…

It’s never too late to become who you might have been. 💚

“I sat with my anger long enough… until she told me her real name was grief.”

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is…

“I’m just an angry person.”

Maybe.

Or maybe anger is simply doing the job it was designed to do.

Because anger is often a bodyguard.

It steps in when we feel hurt.
It shouts when we don’t feel heard.
It protects us when we feel rejected, frightened, ashamed or powerless.

The trouble is… if we only ever argue with our anger, we’ll never hear what it’s trying to protect.

As a psychotherapist, I’ve learned that beneath anger there’s often something much quieter…

Grief.
Fear.
Loneliness.
Disappointment.
A broken heart.

The anger isn’t the enemy.

It’s the messenger.

So instead of asking…

“How do I get rid of my anger?”

Try asking…

“What is my anger trying so hard to protect?”

Sometimes the emotion that’s shouting the loudest is simply trying to stop the one underneath from breaking your heart.

What would your anger tell you… if you listened long enough? 💚

Some people will spend their energy trying to prove they’re better than everyone else.

Others will quietly use that same energy to help someone else believe they’re enough.

Be the second person. 💚

In over30 years of sitting with people at some of the hardest moments of their lives, I’ve learned …

….The strongest people aren’t the loudest.
They aren’t the ones criticising, competing, or trying to dim someone else’s light.

They’re the ones who notice the person sitting quietly in the corner.
They send the text.
They check in.
They offer the hug.
They cheer the loudest when someone else succeeds.

Sure, lifting someone else up doesn’t make you any smaller… it reminds them they’re not carrying life on their own.

And here’s the wee secret…

Kindness is contagious.
Compassion ripples.
Encouragement changes lives.

So today, if you’ve a choice between judging or understanding…
Between criticising or encouraging…
Between walking past or reaching out…

Choose to lift.

Because you never know who is only just keeping their head above water… and your kindness might be the very thing that helps them breathe again. 💚☘️

One phone call.

It might feel like “just making an appointment.”

But it isn’t.

It’s someone deciding they’ve carried the weight for long enough.

It’s someone choosing hope over silence.
Healing over hiding.
Change over staying stuck.

And here’s the wee bit people often forget…

When one person heals, it doesn’t just change their life.

It changes how they parent.
How they love.
How they communicate.
How they cope.
How they show up for the people around them.

Healing has a ripple effect.

So if today you’re thinking about reaching out for support…

Take that first step.

It isn’t weakness.

It’s one of the bravest things you’ll ever do. 💚

It’s that time of year again… 💚

Another academic year ends, our school counsellors head off for a well-earned break, and many of our amazing volunteer counsellors take time to rest and recharge.

So today, this is for my incredible team at Freeflow Counselling Service ….all 26 of you …(not just those I’ve tagged!) and every counsellor, psychotherapist, trainee, volunteer and mental health professional out there…

I see you.

You sit with grief, trauma, anxiety, depression and despair.

You hold hope when your clients can’t.

And the work doesn’t stop when the session ends…

We think.
We plan.
We write.
We reflect.
We seek supervision.
We celebrate every breakthrough.
Many times we carry a wee bit of the pain too.

Behind every 50-minute session are hours of care, professionalism and responsibility.

Perhaps now more than ever, our profession is needed.

More people are struggling.
Waiting lists are longer.
Resources are tighter.
Expectations are higher.

Yet every day, counsellors continue to show up with compassion, courage and hope.

We can’t fix every problem, but we can make sure no one has to face it alone.

So today, thank you.

Thank you for your compassion.
Thank you for your professionalism.
Thank you for your resilience.

You may not always get the recognition you deserve, but you quietly help hold individuals, families and communities together.

Take a bow, rest & recharge 🙏

You’ve earned it. 💚👏

One tiny word
One Massive mindset shift.

‘I can’t.’
‘I’m not good enough.’
‘This will never change.’

Maybe.

But what happens when you add one simple word…

…YET.

‘I’m not there… yet.’
‘I haven’t figured it out… yet.’
‘Healing hasn’t happened… yet.’

‘Yet’ creates possibility.
It reminds your brain that where you are today isn’t where you have to stay.

As counsellors , we see people every day who arrive believing their story is over.

More often than not, it’s simply the end of one chapter… not the whole book.

Don’t let today’s struggle become tomorrow’s identity.

Add the ‘yet’… and keep going. 💚

You believed in Santa because someone else told you he was real.
You struggle to believe in yourself because somewhere along the way, someone convinced you that you weren’t enough.

Here’s the beautiful thing… beliefs aren’t facts.
They’re stories.
And in therapy we know that stories can be rewritten.

Imagine what would change if, just for today, you questioned the old narrative instead of yourself.

Five minutes of believing in your own potential might not change your whole life… but it could change your next decision.
And sometimes that’s all it takes.

Stop waiting to feel confident before you act.
Confidence often shows up after courage.

Your mind has been practising self-doubt for years.
Maybe it’s time to give self-belief a bit of practice too. 💚
