Pendleside Hospice

Pendleside Hospice Our first service, a telephone helpline, was provided from a small office in the old Marsden Hospital.
(212)

Pendleside Hospice exists to promote and enhance the quality of life for people with advancing long term and life limiting illnesses, as well as provide support for their families and carers 💛 Local people commenced fundraising in October 1988 to provide hospice care for Burnley and Pendle people diagnosed with cancer and other life limiting-illnesses. A day care service soon followed and we were

allocated space at Pendle Community Hospital, whilst fundraising continued to build the Hospice, which opened in 1997. Since then, many thousands of local people have benefitted from our specialist palliative and end-of-life services. We now offer day therapy, specialist physiotherapy, complementary therapies, inpatient care, 24/7 hospice at home, counselling, bereavement support and spiritual care. Pendleside was built “by the people and for the people of Burnley and Pendle”; a statement that remains true today. Our vital services are only possible because of the outstanding charitable support of local people, who have given generously to Pendleside over many years. Without that support, the Hospice wouldn't be able to provide care that is relied upon by so many local families at very difficult times in their lives.

Meet the Team Tuesday ✨

Rebecca Smith - Inpatient Unit and Hospice at Home Manager

We’re delighted to introduce Rebecca, who joined the Pendleside family three months ago and has already become a valued member of the team.

As our Inpatient Unit and Hospice at Home Manager, Rebecca provides compassionate and visible leadership across both services, ensuring patients receive high-quality, holistic palliative care, tailored to their individual needs. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, she helps deliver safe and responsive care both within the hospice and in patients' own homes, supporting people to remain in their preferred place of care wherever possible. 🫶

What Rebecca values most about working at Pendleside is the privilege of supporting patients and families during some of the most important and challenging moments of their lives, while working alongside such a compassionate and dedicated team.

Rebecca added: "It's a place where care is genuinely person-centred, and where staff are supported to make a meaningful difference every day. The support within the team is something I really value. We look after each other, share knowledge and work together to provide the best possible care. Nothing is ever too much and, if we can do it, we will. Being part of helping patients and their families make the most precious memories in such difficult circumstances is the most rewarding job anyone could wish for."

🐶Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys relaxing with her husband, spending quality time with her daughters, and getting outdoors with their dogs. She's also hoping to get her family involved in some of Pendleside's amazing fundraising events and is always happy to volunteer and lend a hand whenever she can.

Despite only being with us for three months, Rebecca has settled into her role brilliantly and it already feels as though she has been part of the Pendleside team for years. Her warmth, dedication and leadership have made a real impact, and we are incredibly grateful to have her on the team. 💛

"You don't realise how important a place like Pendleside is until somebody you love needs that support." 💛

On Friday, around 40 of Heidi friends and family will take on the Pendle Pub Walk in her memory.

Heidi was a larger-than-life character. She was loud, funny, fiercely honest and completely unforgettable. A devoted wife, mum, nana and friend, she brought joy wherever she went.

When Heidi was cared for at Pendleside Hospice following her bowel and liver cancer diagnosis, her loved ones made a promise: she would never be alone. Together, they created a rota so that someone was always by her side, day and night.

And throughout it all, Pendleside's staff were there too.

Just days before the first anniversary of Heidi's death, her family and friends will walk together to honour her memory, celebrate her life and raise vital funds for the hospice that cared for her with dignity, compassion and kindness.

As Volunteers’ Week draws to a close, we're reflecting on some of the volunteer moments captured across the last 12 months. From familiar faces who have supported Pendleside for decades to those just beginning their volunteering journey, every volunteer plays a part in making our hospice so special. 🫶

Behind every smile, every event, every Meals on Wheels delivery and every warm welcome by the receptionists is a volunteer giving their time with the goodness of their hearts.

Because of our volunteers, our gardens bloom, our Meals on Wheels service reaches people every single day of the year, our fundraising events bring communities together, our charity shops are filled with friendly faces, and our patients and families are met with kindness, compassion and support when they need it most.

To each and every volunteer, thank you for all that you do. Your impact reaches further than you'll ever know. 💛

Thankful Thursday 🫶

We are incredibly grateful to the friends and family of Sarah Dearden who came together at Pendle Heritage Centre for a fundraising art exhibition celebrating Sarah’s life and creative legacy.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of everyone who supported the event, an amazing £10,360 was raised for Sarah’s daughters, Ella and Mia, with a further £750 from ticket sales donated to Pendleside Hospice. The care and compassion shown by the Hospice meant so much to Sarah and her family during her final weeks.

Sarah was not only a talented contemporary visual artist, known for her expressive portraiture and figure studies, but also a deeply loved mum, friend, and inspiration to so many within the community.

Thank you to everyone who donated, attended, shared memories and helped make the day so special. 💛
