Pendleside Hospice exists to promote and enhance the quality of life for people with advancing long term and life limiting illnesses, as well as provide support for their families and carers 💛 Local people commenced fundraising in October 1988 to provide hospice care for Burnley and Pendle people diagnosed with cancer and other life limiting-illnesses. A day care service soon followed and we were allocated space at Pendle Community Hospital, whilst fundraising continued to build the Hospice, which opened in 1997. Since then, many thousands of local people have benefitted from our specialist palliative and end-of-life services. We now offer day therapy, specialist physiotherapy, complementary therapies, inpatient care, 24/7 hospice at home, counselling, bereavement support and spiritual care. Pendleside was built “by the people and for the people of Burnley and Pendle”; a statement that remains true today. Our vital services are only possible because of the outstanding charitable support of local people, who have given generously to Pendleside over many years. Without that support, the Hospice wouldn't be able to provide care that is relied upon by so many local families at very difficult times in their lives.

In the run-up to Starlight Walk, we're shining a light on some of the people taking part. Meet Lizzy.

“I'm sure he would want myself and Mum to smile as we step out on the fundraising walk.”

This October, Lizzy will be lacing up her boots for our Starlight Walk, in loving memory of her grandad, Brian.

Brian was a proud Yorkshireman, with a passion for cricket and an appreciation for a proper pint! He was happiest spending afternoons at the pub with family, listening to classical music, and tucking into a good fish and chip supper.

Sadly, Brian passed away a few weeks ago after battling Prostate Cancer. While he wasn't cared for by the Pendleside Team himself, Lizzy has seen first-hand the difference our hospice makes through volunteering at one of our Hospice Shops:

Lizzy told us “I've been volunteering for the charity since last year and I enjoy the team I work alongside”.

After witnessing the impact Pendleside has on the community, Lizzy chose to take on the Starlight Walk in memory of her grandad.

Introducing Dogtober at Pendleside Hospice! 🐾

Have you and your four-legged friend signed up yet? 🐶

This October, we’re inviting you to take on our brand-new Dogtober challenge, walk 50 miles throughout October with your dog and help raise vital funds for Pendleside Hospice.

Whether you’re strolling around the park, exploring local trails or simply enjoying your daily walks together, every mile counts! There’s no need to complete the 50 miles all at once – you have the whole of October to reach your goal at your own pace.

And you won’t be doing it alone! More than 60 people have already joined our Dogtober community, where you can share your progress, meet other dog lovers and keep each other motivated throughout the month.

Jean, who is currently being cared for in our Inpatient Unit (IPU) at Pendleside Hospice, has a handful of special wishes, and this week, one of those came true. Jean wanted to enjoy her favourite brunch at Dempsey's in Burnley, right next to her home at Dovestone Gardens.

Jean was looking forward to spending time with her daughter, Hayley, over a cappuccino (no chocolate!) alongside French toast & maple syrup. A table was booked, but just a couple of days before, it became clear that Jean was too unwell to leave the Hospice.

After a conversation over the phone, Mark, the owner of Dempsey's, and Hayley had a wonderful idea... if Jean wasn't able to leave Pendleside, why not bring Dempsey's to Jean? 🥞

This week, Mark and Lucasz visited IPU with Jean's breakfast, bringing with them a delicious fruit crumble too, with lots of extra custard!

"I knew Jean well before her move to Dovestone Gardens and she's been a regular at our restaurant from the start, so I was more than happy to bring her favourite dish," said Mark. "At Dempsey's, we form strong relationships with those living in the apartments and it means a lot to us to fulfil one of Jean's wishes. As we were leaving the restaurant, many of the other residents sent their well wishes."

What a truly wonderful and thoughtful thing to do, thank you! 💛
