💙 Supporting Your Mind as Well as Your Body 💙

At Rae's Anatomy Physiotherapy, we know true wellbeing comes from caring for both body and mind. We're excited to share that our psychological therapy service is growing, and with that growth comes more ways to support you.

Please join us in welcoming Jana, who is joining the team as our second Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (CAAP) delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). We’re so pleased to be able to offer more appointment times as demand increases.

Jana brings over five years’ experience in NHS mental health services, offering evidence-based CBT for anxiety, low mood and other common mental health challenges. She’s also worked in third-sector settings supporting people through bereavement, dementia, acute mental health crises and suicidal distress.

Warm, compassionate and non-judgemental, Jana tailors therapy to each person, helping you understand what’s keeping you stuck and teaching practical, lasting skills to move forward. She supports people with anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, overthinking, emotional overwhelm and the effects of difficult life events.

As a certified yoga teacher for 13+ years, Jana sometimes brings gentle, body-based practices from Nurture Yoga into therapy where it’s helpful, a gentle complement to CBT that can support emotional well-being.

If you’ve been thinking about reaching out, this could be a gentle first step. New CBT appointments with Jana will be available from August at our Burntisland clinic.

"I've got pain at the front of my knee... I just need to strengthen it, right?"

Not necessarily.

Strengthening is often an important part of rehabilitation, but it's rarely the whole answer.

Anterior knee pain (patellofemoral pain) is usually the result of the knee being exposed to more load than it currently has the capacity to tolerate. The challenge is identifying "why" that has happened.

Contributing factors can include:

• Joint mechanics
• Muscle strength and capacity
• Muscle flexibility
• Movement patterns during activities such as running, squatting, and climbing stairs
• Training load and recovery
• Previous injury and overall physical conditioning
• Footwear and other external factors
• Thoughts, beliefs, and confidence around pain and movement

This is why two people with the same diagnosis can require completely different rehabilitation programmes.

Rather than simply asking, "What structure is causing the pain?", a better question is:

"What factors are increasing and influencing the load on the knee, and how can we improve its ability to cope?"

The aim of rehabilitation isn't just to make the knee stronger. It's to improve its capacity, modify the factors driving excessive load where appropriate, and help you return to the activities you enjoy with confidence.

Every knee has a story. The key is understanding yours.

🤔 When you think of shoulder rehabilitation, what comes to mind first?

Stretching? Mobility exercises? Resistance bands?

While these can all be important, successful shoulder rehabilitation is often about much more than the shoulder itself.

The shoulder is part of a larger movement system. Efficient movement relies on strength, coordination, trunk control, balance, mobility, and how the whole body works together. If one piece of the puzzle is missing, the shoulder can end up working harder than it should.

That's why at Rae's Anatomy Physiotherapy, we don't just focus on the painful area. We assess the whole person and the whole movement system to understand what's contributing to your symptoms and help you return to the activities that matter most to you.

💡 Recovery isn't always linear, and rehabilitation isn't always about doing more shoulder exercises. Sometimes it's about improving how your body moves as a whole.

🧠 The Painful Truth About Pain

The more we learn about pain, the more we realise just how complex it is.

In truth, saying we fully understand pain would be an overstatement.

Even pain scientists continue to explore and debate exactly how pain works.

What we do know is that pain is influenced by many factors.

And perhaps most importantly:

🌍 Pain is contextual.

We have all experienced this.

Imagine you stub your toe.

If you're relaxed and having a good day, you might swear for a few seconds and move on.

If you're stressed, exhausted, running late, and feeling overwhelmed, that same stubbed toe can feel much worse.

Same toe.
Same force.
Different context.

Let's take another example.

How often have you gone on holiday and found yourself saying:

My back felt much better while I was away 🏖️🚶

What changed?

* Warmer weather?
* More walking?
* More exercise?
* Better sleep?
* Less stress?
* More time with family and friends?
* A break from work pressures?

The reality is, it's often difficult to pinpoint exactly what changed.

More often than not, it's likely a combination of factors rather than a single cause.

Pain is influenced by much more than what's happening in our tissues, including:

• Sleep
• Stress
• Previous experiences
• Beliefs
• Expectations
• Confidence
• Mood
• Social connection
• General health and wellbeing

This doesn't mean pain is "all in your head."

Pain is always real.

But pain is not always a measure of damage.

Pain is an experience shaped by the brain and nervous system using information from many different sources.

One thing we do understand is that when the body perceives greater threat, pain often becomes more protective.

Part of rehabilitation is helping people:

✔ Better understand their pain
✔ Build confidence in movement
✔ Reduce unnecessary threat
✔ Reconnect with the activities that matter to them

Because recovery isn't always about fixing damaged tissues.

Sometimes it's about changing the context in which pain exists.

**Pain is real.**

**Pain is complex.**

**Pain is contextual.**

And perhaps that's one of the most important things we understand about pain today.

⚡ Shocking results from Shockwave Therapy...

If you've been struggling with persistent pain that just won't go away, and you've tried everything from rest and rehabilitation to injections without lasting success, Shockwave Therapy could be the treatment you've been looking for.

Shockwave Therapy is commonly used to treat:

✔ Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
✔ Achilles tendinopathy
✔ Tennis elbow
✔ Golfer's elbow
✔ Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
✔ Rotator cuff tendinopathy
✔ Calcific shoulder pain
✔ Gluteal tendinopathy (pain on the outside of the hip)
✔ Some cases of frozen shoulder

By delivering targeted acoustic waves to the affected area, Shockwave Therapy helps stimulate the body's natural healing processes and can reduce pain in chronic tendon conditions.

We're seeing excellent results in patients with long-standing pain who felt they had run out of options.

If you're experiencing ongoing symptoms and wondering whether Shockwave Therapy could help, get in touch. We'd be happy to answer any questions and discuss whether it's the right treatment for you.

📧 [email protected]
📞 07588 468380

We can also send you our Shockwave Therapy information leaflet on request.

Have a shockingly good day!

"What matters to you?"

It's arguably one of the most important questions we can ask in rehabilitation.

When people first come to see us, the answer is often simple:

"I just want less pain."

But then comes the important follow-up question:

Why?

Do you want less pain so you can complete a marathon?

Play football with your grandchildren?

Pick up your children without hesitation?

Get back on your bike?

Enjoy a round of golf with friends?

And sometimes it's not even about the activity itself. Maybe golf isn't just golf. Maybe it's connection, friendship, community, and being part of something bigger.

The more we understand what truly matters to you, the better we can build a rehabilitation plan around your goals, not someone else's.

Because focusing solely on pain doesn't always lead to the outcomes that matter most.

When we identify what is meaningful to you, we can create clear, achievable stepping stones that move you closer to the life you want to live.

There is no cookie-cutter solution in rehabilitation. No one-size-fits-all fix.

That's what makes rehab so rewarding.

It's personal.

It's individual.

And at its heart, it's about helping people get back to what matters most.

Fridays are my favourite, working alongside my husband, both of us back-to-back with clients all day. But in the middle of the chaos, we steal 15 minutes for a cuppa, a kiss, and a moment to ground each other before the next round begins. We both truly love what we do, and building a family business together makes it even more special 🥰
