Ever wondered how the eye test came to be? 👁️

It's something we all take rather for granted — the familiar chart, the "is it better with lens one, or lens two?", the quiet room, the reassuring nod at the end. But the modern eye test is a surprisingly recent invention.

1843 — The first known letter chart is developed in Germany by Heinrich Küchler, using pictures rather than letters to help measure vision.

1862 — A Dutch ophthalmologist named Herman Snellen creates the famous Snellen Chart, the rows of black letters that get progressively smaller. It's still used in practices around the world today, over 160 years later.

Early 1900s — The trial frame and lens set are refined, allowing opticians to test different prescriptions properly for the first time. The "better with one, or better with two?" routine begins.

1960s onwards — Modern equipment transforms the profession. Retinoscopes, slit lamps, and computerised charts allow far more accurate testing than ever before.

Today — Advanced technology like OCT scanners and the HOYA visuReal Master allow us to capture the health of the eye in extraordinary detail, spotting conditions long before they'd cause any noticeable symptoms.

That's what we've been doing here in Bury St. Edmunds since 1959, and what we'll continue doing for many years to come. 😊

Can what you eat really make a difference to your eyes?

The short answer — yes, more than most people realise.

Your eyes rely on a surprisingly specific set of nutrients to stay healthy over time. And while a good diet won't change your prescription, it plays a genuine role in protecting your long-term vision.

A few of the ones worth knowing about:
