They may look similar but they are not the same.
Cellulite is incredibly common and completely normal. It happens when fat pushes against connective tissue beneath the skin, creating the familiar “orange peel” or dimpled texture. It isn’t a disease, isn’t usually painful, and can affect people of all body types.
Lipedema, on the other hand, is a chronic medical condition involving an abnormal buildup of fat, most commonly in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms. It primarily affects women and often develops or worsens during hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
Here are some key differences:
✨ Cellulite
• Cosmetic skin texture change
• Usually painless
• Can appear on almost anyone
• Doesn’t typically affect mobility
💜 Lipedema
• Symmetrical fat buildup in the legs and/or arms
• Pain, tenderness, or heaviness are common
• Bruises easily
• Swelling may increase throughout the day
• Feet and hands are often spared, creating a noticeable “cuff” at the ankles or wrists
• Can impact mobility and quality of life if left untreated
While there’s no cure for lipedema, early diagnosis and proper management can make a significant difference. Treatments such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), compression therapy, appropriate exercise, and professional care can help reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and manage symptoms.
If you’ve always been told it’s “just cellulite” but you’re experiencing pain, heaviness, or easy bruising, it may be worth speaking to a healthcare professional for a proper assessment.
