Please note that, due to reduced staffing, we are operating a single building today, Friday 28th August, at Hartington Rd. All services, including Reception queries and our On Call emergency list are available as normal from 8am - 6:30pm, but all staff will be working at Hartington Rd.

Burlington Rd Pharmacy will operate as normal today.

Both sites will be open as normal after the bank holiday on Tuesday 1st September.

Millions of women in England are to be offered HPV self-testing kits as the new service rolls out from today.

The kits will be offered to those who haven’t attended cervical screening following previous invitations, providing a discreet and convenient way to test for high-risk HPV at home.

Women who are eligible will start receiving invitations today via the NHS App, text message, email or letter, and once invited they will be able to order a free kit through the NHS App or their NHS online account. Further details available via the link below.

Today we’re sharing something a little more personal than our usual posts.

Our dear friend and colleague, Dr Huw McCandless, is facing a very difficult journey after being diagnosed with brain cancer and is due to begin treatment shortly.

We wanted to use our page to help raise awareness of their fundraising campaign and, hopefully, help them receive some additional support from our wonderful patients, colleagues and wider community.

'I'm Huw, a dad and a 39 year-old GP living with incurable brain cancer. I've always poured my energy into the things I love: family, friends, food & cooking, sports, travel and caring for my patients. I also love staying active - I completed the Manchester half marathon in June 2026 while on chemotherapy.

I'm dad to my amazing 3 year-old son Jacob, and husband to my lovely wife Laura. We have two gorgeous dogs Dexter and Kora to complete the family. I'm also a son, brother, uncle, grandson, cousin, nephew and friend to wonderful people who have been there for me through the best and hardest times in my life.

I was diagnosed with a brain tumour after I had a seizure on Boxing Day 2019. After 8 hours of awake surgery - which means I am conscious throughout the operation - followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the tumour remained stable for several years and I was able to return to living life and the job that I genuinely love, being a GP.

Unfortunately, the tumour returned, requiring further awake surgery and different types of chemotherapy treatment, but now the chemotherapy has stopped working. The tumour is growing again.

I am now facing further surgery followed by radiotherapy. Whilst I am relieved that surgery is still an option, the reality of awake surgery means it is incredibly painful and frightening, as well as being risky and uncertain.

Alongside this, I have met with a clinic (CeGaT) in Germany who offer a new immunotherapy treatment that is not available in the UK. They plan to use tissue sample from my upcoming surgery to manufacture a personalised vaccine to target my cancer. Although it's not been clinically trialled in the UK there is evidence that this modern treatment can be effective in slowing tumour growth, hopefully giving me precious extra time.

As a family we've raised over £15,000 for Brain Tumour Research and The Christie Cancer Charity. I am now asking for fundraising to help me through this next difficult phase. I will need to take time off work while having and recovering from the brain surgery, putting more financial pressure on my family. We have already had to sell our “forever home”, downsizing to reduce this pressure as much as possible.

Any funds raised will be used in helping support me and my family, both by gaining access to this expensive life-extending treatment and providing greater financial stability for Jacob’s future. The cost of the treatment alone is €90,000. On top of this I also need to think about travelling to and from Germany for treatment.

In the event that I am unable to travel for the immunotherapy treatment then the fundraising will contribute to my care and Jacob's future, giving me some much needed peace of mind about when I am no longer here.

My ultimate goal is to stay alive for as long as possible and cherish every moment with my loved ones, especially Jacob and Laura. I will continue to give all my energy to the most special parts of my life while I can.

I've spent my life caring for others as a GP - a career I have loved - and I have taken my own advice by using exercise to help me keep fit in body and mind. We plan to incorporate fitness goals into our fundraising events and hope to inspire a few people along the way to use fitness to promote better body and mental health.

From Monday 24 August, there will be a small change to how people access Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs) at Buxton, Ilkeston, Ripley and Whitworth hospitals. The changes are being introduced to help manage increasing demand and ensure patients are assessed and directed to the most appropriate service.

All four UTCs will remain open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, the changes relate to how people can access UTCs in the evening.

Opening and access arrangements from Monday 24 August:

Ilkeston, Ripley and Whitworth UTCs
Walk-in (no appointment needed): 8am–5pm
Appointment only (via NHS 111): 5pm–8pm

Buxton UTC
Walk-in (no appointment needed): 8am–4pm
Appointment only (via NHS 111): 4pm–8pm

What you need to do:

During walk-in hours, you can still attend a UTC without an appointment, but we always encourage people to contact NHS 111 first to be assessed and directed to the most appropriate service.

Outside walk-in hours, access is by appointment only by calling NHS 111.

These changes will help ensure UTC services continue to provide safe and effective care for local people while making sure patients receive treatment in the most appropriate setting.

To help you get the right care, first time:

* For minor illnesses and injuries, consider self-care and advice from your local pharmacy first. Pharmacists can advise on a wide range of conditions and treatments without an appointment.

* For urgent but non-life-threatening conditions, contact NHS 111 (online at 111.nhs.uk or by calling 111). NHS 111 will assess your symptoms and, where appropriate, arrange an appointment at a UTC or direct you to another suitable service.

* In a life-threatening emergency, always call 999 or go to A&E.
