When dealing with a hamstring injury, the two things that determine a successful return to sport are the eccentric strength and fascicle length of the hamstrings. We restore this by having athletes return to eccentric loading of the hamstring as soon as possible, in a criteria based program, whereby exercise intensity and selection is changed as the athlete hits certain milestones.

Alongside this, we incorporate a walk, jog, walk protocol and advance to a jog, sprint, jog protocol, in a graded manner to slowly reintroduce sprinting before the player returns to play.

Here are some options for early ankle rehabilitation. These should only be done following a diagnosis of a lateral ankle sprain after alternative injuries, including concomitant fractures, have been ruled out.

Please seek professional care and discontinue if the alone exercises worsen symptoms or increase swelling.

Initially your aims will be to reduce swelling, improve ankle function (strength & ROM), and normalise walking.
