What can a single leg floor tap tell you about your knee pain?

Quick self test:
❓does your foot wobble?
❓are you able to do this smoothly?
❓is one leg easier than the other?

A lot of knee problems are caused or made worse by:
- poor single leg strength
- Poor single leg control

Having strong ankles/feet and glutes is important for knee health. Having a good level of strength in these areas helps to prevent unnecessary rotation through the knee.

If you can feel something’s not right, it’s worth seeing a physio early.

Recently I did another workshop with this year's trainees on the British Mountain Guide Scheme. It's been a pleasure to run these sessions. Being a mountain guide is a very physically demanding job with a high work related injury rate . I tried to take a more holistic approach in this workshop, looking at lifestyle factors and habits that can prevent injury, as well as in season body maintenance. I hope the trainees have taken something away from the evening that will help them continue to work in the mountains for years to come! Thanks for the invitation and photos .

Recent trip to Pembroke with Iwona Gabrys. We really lucked out with the weather. The rock was solid (mostly) the sea was calm (mostly!), the craic was excellent. Also saw some puffins 😍.

As a former outdoor instructor, I have first hand experience of the impact an outdoor job can have on your body. So I am always super happy to support people in this physically demanding sector. I have been writing a series of articles for the Professional Mountaineer, the magazine published by . The Mountain Training Association is the official membership body and support network for anyone working towards, or holding, a walking, climbing, or mountaineering qualification in the UK and Ireland. This article focused on how to keep knees healthy and pain free when doing multiple days in the mountains.

Back pain - busting some myths. Often people who come to me with back pain are worried that something has slipped out of place. Disc bulges are relatively common. But they don’t generally occur as the result of one poor lifting decision or that one time you sneezed really hard. Your back is inherently stable and is designed to move in every direction. Confused about what is causing your back pain and what to do about it? Stay tuned for my upcoming blog post.
