Light beings take many forms and I believe that Dolly Parton was one of them. Oprah Winfrey said as much in a tribute last night: “She brought the light, and we are all better because she was here.”
Dolly Parton donated hundreds of millions of dollars over her lifetime to fund scientific research and literacy initiatives. Her passion for literacy will be remembered as one of her greatest legacies. Inspired by her father’s illiteracy, she created the Imagination Library which offers a free high-quality book each month to children all around the world. At the end of last year, the Dollywood Foundation had gifted more than six million books in the UK alone.
“You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children,” she said. “I believe that when you’re in a position to help, you should help. Money goes in, money comes out.”
She went on to describe trying to keep “an open heart and open mind, open eyes and open hands. I just wanted to do what I could in this world to make things better if I can - and I’m in a position to do it.”
Her music touched all of us, but it was Dolly’s warmth, humour and enormous heart that made her truly one of a kind.
“Life is short. When I die, I’ll really be getting to live because I believe there is a greater place than this,” she liked to say. “Keep your dreams big and your hair bigger.”
