Battling On

Battling On Supporting the Armed Forces Community since 2012.

The courage and devotion of our forces are recognised, without a doubt, however, it has also been recognised that some service personnel find it difficult to settle back into civilian life after leaving the forces. Battling On was established to support members of the British Armed Forces who have retired from the services and are struggling to readjust to civilian life.

โญJoin us tomorrow for our Walker Lines Heritage Tour

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธWed 5 Aug | 11am-12pm | ยฃ2

๐Ÿช– Retrace the steps of thousands of American soldiers posted to Bodmin during the Second World War!

The tour begins at the gates of Bodmin Keep behind the Grade II* listed war memorial at the front of the building. From here, you will be guided to the adjoining Walker Lines Industrial Estate, formally a large military camp. During the Second World War, the camp was occupied by American troops in the build up to the Normandy Landings, known as D-Day.

The walk will show you some of the remaining buildings from the Second World War and bring to life its hidden heritage, with archive photographs and stories uncovered by our researchers.

Accessibility details: This guided walk is on foot, on pavements with occasional road crossings for approximately 1 mile. Please wear suitable footwear. Additional information: Due to urgent preservation work the museum building will be closed to visitors. This heritage walk will focus on the exterior of the building and nearby landmarks.

There will be a short remembrance service in Victoria Gardens on Thursday 6th August, to remember the lives lost on the evening of 6th August 1942. This service is led by the Truro Branch of the Royal British Legion.

๐Ÿ“Victoria Gardens
๐Ÿ“…Thursday 6th August
โฑ๏ธService begins at 11.00am (Gathering from 10.30am, short procession at 10.50am)

On the evening of Thursday 6th August 1942, Truro was the target of a surprise bombing raid by two low-flying Luftwaffe aircraft. The attack resulted in 14 deaths, 65 injuries, and significant structural damage, including over 100 houses damaged and three completely destroyed.

Due to the low altitude and speed of the aircraft, British radar systems did not detect them in time, and air raid sirens were not activated. As a result, residents received no warning prior to the explosions.

This service will provide an opportunity for the community of Truro to reflect and remember those affected by the tragic events of that night.

Are you a knitter who would like to help Naval children? ๐Ÿงถ๐Ÿ’™

We are looking for lovely volunteers to help us support Naval children who are separated from a parent during deployment or time spent working away.

As part of our Wellbeing Packs, we send out over 300 packs each year to children and families. Each pack includes one of our special books, along with a cheerful knitted rabbit or penguin to bring comfort and connection when families are apart.

At the moment, we are especially in need of Henry penguins. ๐Ÿง

If you would like to get involved, you can find the knitting patterns on our website.

Every stitch helps us support a Naval child.
