Kernow Health’s long-term conditions lead, Heather, has been involved in a powerful, deaf lived experience project, which has been recognised for improving patient involvement and choice across Cornwall and beyond.
Heather was invited to take part in a series of educational films in British Sign Language (BSL), where she interviewed local people about their experiences with diabetes and pre-diabetes.
NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly who led the project in partnership with Diabetes UK, Hearing Loss Cornwall, and other local partners, has been named a regional champion in the first-ever NHS Excellence Awards, winning the Patient Involvement and Choice Award for a project built around ‘Isaac’s story’ - the lived experience of a young deaf man from Cornwall.
Heather said: “I really enjoyed working with everyone involved, and this project clearly highlights the need to better support the deaf community. I am now in the process of registering as a Diabetes UK volunteer and hope to be able to support the local lunch club in Camborne in the near future.”
The work highlights the communication barriers deaf people can face when accessing health and public services, and it has helped spark local engagement and system-wide improvements across Cornwall.
