Today is A-level results day. Send this on to your child or a young person close to you who might need it. No matter what their results are, they should be proud of themselves and the effort they've put in. And if they don't get what they expected, let them know to keep this message in mind. They've got this.

Reframing a critical inner voice - We probably all have one!
Intercept the Thought...
Say "Stop" Out Loud: Use a physical or verbal cue to interrupt a negative thought loop the moment you notice it starting.
Write It Down: Put the critical thought on paper to instantly drain its emotional power and view it objectively.
Question the Logic...
The Friendship Test: Ask yourself if you would ever say these exact words to a close friend who made the same mistake.
Fact vs. Feeling: Demand objective evidence for the criticism to quickly separate temporary emotions from actual facts.
Deconstruct the Absolute: Challenge absolute words like "always" or "never" by finding one specific counter-example where you succeeded.
Pivot to Coaching...
The "Yet" Addition: Add the word "yet" to the end of any self-limiting statement to transform a fixed failure into a growth opportunity.
Action-Oriented Reframing: Shift your focus from “Why am I so bad at this?” to “What is one small thing I can do to improve this right now?”.
Objective Observation: Swap out emotional labels like "I ruined everything" for neutral, factual descriptions of what actually happened.
It takes work - but it does work!
Challenging the status quo activates neuroplasticity. It forces your brain to break old habits and build new neural connections.
I promise!

Fewer high-pressure exams. More focus on preparing young people for life beyond school. Less anxiety, fear, burnout and overwhelm. More space for joy. More freedom to explore and make mistakes. More room for mental health and wellbeing.

The education system puts too much focus on exam results. And it's created a toxic culture of stress and anxiety for young people.

Talent and success aren't just reflected through exams. They can show up and be expressed in so many different ways.

Numbers on a piece of paper will never define a young person's worth or potential. And our education system should reflect that.
