New here?
I’m Shannon, VBAC & ND-affirming doula and an ND & VBA3C parent myself.
I’ve set myself a challenge to post something every day for the next 28 days 😬
Stick around, it won’t be boring! 🙈😂

I know they have to make sure they’re covered legally but it gets tedious being treated like a child.

Just ask for permission, it’s not that hard.

Being asked how you’re feeling and handed a leaflet on contraception is not adequate.

The reason we have to make detailed birth plans is because we’re not being listened to verbally.

If you’ve had to have a previous section and have never physiologically birthed a baby, you’ll hear this a lot.

Babies don’t follow schedules. It’s as simple as that.

In my honest opinion, the best time to start looking for a doula is before you get that positive pregnancy test! 😂
On a more serious note though, the earlier the better. Not only does it give you both more time to build a genuine relationship with your doula but you can also spread the payment out over a longer period; something which I know firsthand is a blocker for so many people!
So if you’ve been thinking about hiring a doula, send the message today!

I feel like I’m really outing myself here with these but in my opinion, if I want a client to be comfortable with me in their birth space, I have to be vulnerable too!
If you’re also a doula, please share in the comments so I feel less alone!
And if you’re pregnant (or have ever been pregnant!) let me know if any of these would have made you more (or less likely!) to hire a doula 🙈😂

I’ve been busy creating a free guide. It’s nothing fancy but it’s something I wish I had had when I was preparing to give birth.

Every pregnant person (in my opinion!) should have somewhere in their home where they can go when things get a bit wobbly.

It’s entirely yours to create. It doesn’t have to be an altar or rooted in religion, just a slice of “you” to bring you back to yourself.

As your doula, I can discuss what helps you feel grounded and we can gather items to put in your corner together.
(Highly recommend The Purple Spell for inspiration!)

Comment “CORNER” to get it and share this post with whoever you think would benefit from a I-Can-Do-Hard-Things-Corner!

I said what I said.
Your body, your birth, your choice. No one else is the expert on your body or how you feel.
That consultant who told you you “need” a c section because you’ve had one before? She won’t remember you next week. But you’ll remember her for the rest of your life.

I understand the value a doula can bring. That support and understanding is unmatched, no one else will be in your corner as hard as your doula will. Everyone else in the room when you give birth has part of their attention on the baby. Your doula’s full attention will be on you. And that’s why I think it’s 100000% worth it to hire one.
And yet, I still struggle to spend money on myself. Especially when I need things. I’m not a frivolous spender and it takes me ages to buy something. I always find an excuse, even if I know it will make my life better or easier.
So it would be wrong for me to stand here and tell you that you should be spending money on a doula above expensive items the baby industry has convinced you you need. But I understand that mental pull between knowing you’d benefit from something but feeling guilty for it.
If you’re thinking about hiring a doula, the link to a no pressure connection call is in my bio ♄

It will probably come as no surprise to anyone who’s late diagnosed that boys are more likely to be diagnosed as autistic in childhood đŸ€ŻđŸ™„ and that by adulthood, it’s evened itself out đŸ«Ș
As someone who received her AuDHD diagnoses earlier this year, this comes as no surprise to me. I’d become an expert at blending in, adapting to every environment and situation because drawing attention to myself made me want to đŸ€ź
And often pregnancy and motherhood is the thing that brings this realisation to the surface. That’s why I support ND clients, I know what it’s like to be in that situation.
If you’re feeling the same and would benefit from extra pregnancy and birth support, please arrange a free connection call with me ♄

“Oxytocin running in the ether
”

Maybe it’s because I’ve had Aqua Regia on repeat lately but I’ve been thinking about oxytocin. Not as a hormone to optimise but as a reminder that feeling safe, informed and supported matters too đŸ€Č

If you’ve ever wondered what a doula actually does, maybe the better question is:
“How do they make you feel?”
That’s always the part that matters most to me đŸ„°
