We do what we can…

To keep cool- fill a hot water bottle 3/4 with cool water, pop it in the freezer for an hour or two and Bob’s your Uncle- a cool friend to wrap your arms around.

Hot weather alert! ⚠️

Just a friendly reminder that we're about to experience some extremely hot weather all over the UK this week.

With temperatures expected to exceed 30°C and potentially reaching 38°C in some areas, it is crucial that we all look after our bodies - and that means staying hydrated!

If you're on dialysis, your daily fluid intake is likely to be restricted. To help stay comfortable in hot weather without exceeding your fluid allowance, focus on other ways to keep cool, such as staying indoors during the hottest part of the day and choosing ice-cold snacks to help prevent overheating.

A POTENTIAL NEW ERA IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

For more than 30 years, tacrolimus has been the cornerstone of preventing kidney transplant rejection. It has saved countless lives, but it also comes with a significant downside: over time, it can damage the very kidney it is protecting.
Now, researchers have reported encouraging results from an experimental immunosuppressant called tegoprubart, which may change that.
In a clinical trial presented at the American Transplant Congress, patients receiving tegoprubart had better kidney function beginning just one month after transplant, no graft loss during the study, fewer rejection episodes, and fewer side effects, including less acute kidney injury.
Unlike tacrolimus, which broadly suppresses the immune system, tegoprubart selectively blocks the CD40L pathway, offering a more targeted approach to preventing rejection while preserving long term kidney function.
A larger Phase 3 trial is expected later this year. If these results are confirmed, this could become one of the most important advances in kidney transplantation since tacrolimus was introduced in the 1990s.
For kidney transplant recipients, the goal has always been simple: protect the transplant, preserve kidney function, and enjoy the longest, healthiest life possible. This research brings us one step closer.

How quickly research is protecting people.
We have no idea what’s around the corner but we can live with hope for current and future research projects…

New research has revealed that a simple blood test could identify whether a person is developing heart or kidney disease years before symptoms appear.

The test works by analysing subtle chemical changes on red blood cells, which carry a biochemical 'imprint' reflecting the health of the blood vessel lining.

Previously, detecting this type of vascular damage relied on invasive tissue biopsies and advanced microscopy techniques.

Our chief research officer, Dr David Crosby, said: "We are delighted to hear the results of this research from Dr Butler, Professor Satchell and their team at the University of Bristol. More research is needed, but this new method may give us a window of opportunity to detect disease and intervene early, and to save lives."
