Pain is often much more complex than just tissue damage.
How often do we see people still experiencing pain months or even years after an injury? By that stage, the tissues have usually healed, yet the pain remains.
That’s because pain is influenced by many factors, not just what’s happening in the muscles, joints, tendons, or discs. Your nervous system, sleep, stress levels, mood, physical activity, beliefs about pain, previous experiences, and overall health can all play a role in how pain is experienced.
Understanding that pain is multifactorial doesn’t mean your pain isn’t real. It means there are often more opportunities to improve it than simply focusing on the injured structure.
Pain is real. Pain is complex. And recovery is about much more than tissues alone.
