Wonderful to be back here presenting on "Overthinking and Anxiety" here at the Kensington and Chelsea Over 50s Forum. A beautiful, warm day in London with a engaged audience who, again, asked lots of interesting questions.

I talked around how overthinking can feel exhausting.

The mind replays conversations.
Predicts problems.
Analyses every possibility.
Searches for certainty that never quite arrives.

And the strange thing is… most people who overthink are not weak or incapable.

Usually, they are thoughtful people with sensitive, active minds that have become stuck in protection mode.

The brain starts believing:
“If I think enough, maybe I can prevent something bad from happening.”

So the mind keeps going.
Round and round.

But overthinking rarely creates peace.

Instead, it often creates:

Anxiety
Mental exhaustion
Difficulty sleeping
Self-doubt
Trouble relaxing
Feeling emotionally “stuck”

One of the most important things to understand is this:

Overthinking is not always a thinking problem.

Very often, it is a nervous system problem.

When the brain feels under threat — stress, pressure, uncertainty, emotional overwhelm — it stays alert. And an alert brain keeps scanning, analysing, and rehearsing.

That’s why simply telling yourself to “stop thinking” usually doesn’t work.

The nervous system must learn safety again.

This is where hypnotherapy can help.

By calming the subconscious threat response, hypnotherapy can help reduce mental looping, quiet the mind, and create a greater sense of emotional calm and control.

You do not need to fight your thoughts.

Sometimes the real change begins when the mind finally realises… it no longer has to stay on guard all the time.

One of the most confusing things about anxiety is how physical it can feel.

Racing heart.
Tight chest.
Shaking.
Dizziness.
Butterflies in the stomach.
Feeling unable to fully relax.

Many people begin to worry that something is seriously wrong with them physically — when in reality, this is often the nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect you.

Anxiety is not “just in the mind.”

When the brain perceives danger — even emotional danger like stress, pressure, conflict, or uncertainty — it activates the fight-or-flight response.

Adrenaline increases. Cortisol increases.
Breathing changes.
Muscles tighten.
The body prepares to act.

The problem is that for many people, this response becomes overactive. The mind starts detecting threat where there may not actually be danger, and the body reacts automatically.

That’s why anxiety can feel so real and so intense.

This is also why trying to “just calm down” often doesn’t work. The nervous system needs to feel safe again — not simply be told to relax.

This is where hypnotherapy can help.

By working with the subconscious mind and calming the body’s automatic threat response, hypnotherapy can help:

Reduce physical anxiety symptoms
Calm overthinking
Lower nervous system activation
Build feelings of safety and control
Help the mind and body respond differently to stress

You do not have to stay stuck in a constant state of alertness.

The body can learn calm again.

And often, when the nervous system changes, everything else begins to feel easier too.

I have worked with many clients with different levels of anxiety, hypnotherapy is a very safe and effective way of reducing it.

Do you ever feel stuck… but don’t fully know why?

You want to move forward, but something keeps holding you back.

That’s often not a lack of motivation — it’s an internal pattern.

Until that pattern changes, things tend to stay the same.

That’s where hypnotherapy can help.

If you’re ready for change, message me and we can talk, without any obligation, on how I can help you move forward.

Confidence isn’t something you’re born with.

It’s something your brain learns.

If you’ve had experiences that knocked your confidence, your mind may now default to doubt.

That can change.

I help people rebuild confidence at a subconscious level — so it feels natural, not forced.

If you’re ready to feel more like yourself again, message me and we can talk about how I can help you move forward..

Do you work for a sociopath or a psychopath? We probably all have, or will, at some points in our lives, and here are some useful tips to help you deal with the strain that can bring.

Working for someone with strong narcissistic, psychopathic, or highly manipulative traits can be emotionally exhausting.

Over time, we can begin to doubt ourselves, second-guess our instincts, and feel constantly “on edge” without fully understanding why.

Common experiences include:

Feeling like nothing is ever good enough
Walking on eggshells
Sudden mood shifts or unpredictable reactions
Being praised one moment and criticised the next
Feeling drained, anxious, or emotionally confused

One of the most important things to remember is this:

You do not have to absorb another person’s behaviour or emotional instability.

People with highly manipulative traits often create pressure, urgency, confusion, or emotional tension around them. It can become very easy to start reacting automatically to their moods.

Remaining calm is not weakness.
Keeping boundaries is not selfish.
Protecting your mental wellbeing is not overreacting.

Helpful things to remember:

Pause before reacting emotionally
Keep communication clear and factual
Don’t get pulled into unnecessary conflict
Document important conversations where appropriate
Maintain support outside of work
Notice when your nervous system is constantly in “alert mode”

Most importantly, trust your perception.

If being around someone consistently leaves you feeling anxious, diminished, or emotionally exhausted, your mind and body may be telling you something important.

No job is worth losing your sense of self over.

And if the stress has begun affecting your confidence, sleep, anxiety levels, or emotional wellbeing, support can help more than you might think.

I have worked with many, many people across education, health and the emergency services who have experienced toxic leadership. Message me to see how I can help.

One of the things people sometimes say to me is:

“I don’t think I could work with someone I already know.”

And it’s completely understandable to feel that way at first.

But the reality is, many people choose to work with a hypnotherapist they already know because there is already a sense of trust, familiarity, and comfort established. Often, that can make it easier to open up and begin the process of change.

As a professional hypnotherapist, sessions are always confidential, non-judgmental, and focused entirely on helping you achieve your goals — whether that’s anxiety, confidence, panic attacks, phobias, stress, habits, sleep, or something else entirely.

During a session, the focus is not on social roles or everyday interactions. It’s about creating a safe, calm space where you can work on what matters to you.

Sometimes the people closest to us are also the people best placed to help guide us toward positive change.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you could still come and see me because we already know each other, the answer is absolutely yes.

And if you’d like an informal chat first, you’re always welcome to get in touch.

Sometimes things that seem "small" and "insignificant" simply aren't. Like the way my dog's ears flap when she travels on the London Underground. The thing is, the way her ears move may not be that important in the grand scheme of things but the fact that I can find them funny is.

When our mental health is good we can appreciate the "small" things, and Meg is very, very small, that make life worth living.

We all have collections of neural pathways in our brains. We light them up when we think. I start each session by asking, perhaps, a surprising question 'What has been good?" This is like a mini workout for our positive brain, the prefrontal cortex. When we think in that part we are optimistic and change becomes easier. We also find ourselves laughing and smiling too. If you would like to achieve positive change do contact me.

Sometimes people simply don't think of seeing a therapist when, perhaps, they should. Here are five reasons why...

1. Stigma and Shame: Many people hesitate to seek therapy due to the perceivedstigma surrounding mental health issues. There is a pervasive fear of being judged or labelled as "weak" or "unstable." This can be particularly challenging in cultures or communities where mental health issues are not openly discussed. It’s important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength and self-awareness, not a weakness.
