Get started with building your balanced plate for your next meal…

🥚🫘🍗Aim to fill a ¼ of your plate with protein, like chicken, oily or white fish, eggs, cheese, tofu, beans or lentils, as well as nuts and seeds. Ideally you’re aiming for 30g of protein per meal.

🥦🍅🥕Fill around ½ of your plate with vegetables.
This is roughly 200-250g and could include salads, steamed, roasted or stir fried vegetables or vegetable-based soups.

🍞🍚🌾Fill the remaining ¼ of your plate with healthy, slow release carbohydrates. These might include wholegrains such as seeded or wholegrain bread, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, quinoa or bulgur wheat. Legumes such as lentils or beans can also fit here, as they are a rich source of complex carbohydrates.

🫒Use healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil for cooking or in dressings to support satiety and nutrient absorption.

When we eat this way, meals are nourishing. They provide energy and work with our natural hunger and satiety signals rather than against them.

Body image? Distracted by tech? Battling time constraints? Unresolved heath worries? Concerned with status - whether that’s by the choice trainers, watches, or even the privilege of focusing on well being?

There’s a uniquely male lens that obscures the emotional hurdles that get in the way of caring for our mental health. Developing the skill of reflection and identifying patterns (positive and negative) can be rewarding in so many ways. Relationships, stress, problem solving, financial, health just for starters.

Keeping blood glucose levels balanced is about consistency, says Eleanor Thrupp, nutritionist at The Northgate Clinic, Canterbury. Call 01227 478674 to book your appointment for your personalised approach to nutritional therapy..

● Aim for regular meals that include:
- a source of protein (chicken, eggs, beans, tofu)
- vegetables (as much colour and diversity)
- fibre rich carbohydrates (wholegrains, quinoa)
- healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts & seeds)
Including these on your plate helps to slow digestion and keep your glucose levels more stable.

● Choose low GI carbohydrates
Refined carbohydrates such as white bread, white pasta and sugary snacks spike glucose quickly. Swap them for:
- oats (porridge, overnight oats) instead of sugary cereal
- brown rice or quinoa instead of white rice
- fruits and vegetables with their skins on

● Movement
Moving after eating can help your body use glucose more efficiently. Try going for a 10-15 minute walk on your lunch break.

● Stay hydrated
Dehydration can not only affect blood sugar regulation but also impact energy levels throughout the day. Aim to be drinking between 1.5 and 2 litres of water per day.

● Prioritise sleep
Poor sleep can make your body more insulin-resistant and therefore impact food choices you make. When we are tired, we usually choose foods that are high in sugar rather than nourishing. Aim for consistent, good quality sleep.

● Manage stress
Stress hormones can raise blood glucose levels. Simple tools like deep breathing, meditation or light exercise can help.

Hypnotherapy is a way of speaking to our subconscious mind and teaching it to respond to memories of experience with calm compassion. Our subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between memory and experience - it can repeat and deepen trauma with every triggered response. Hypnotherapy teaches our subconscious mind to break the cycle and find a calmer path.
