As part of his £2.43 million gift to 22 animal charities from his Mortality tour, Ricky Gervais gave £150,000 to Animals Asia, which leads major work to stop bear bile farming in Vietnam. 🧸💛🩺
Bear bile farming harms thousands of bears across parts of Asia, especially moon bears and sun bears. These animals are often kept in severely cramped cages for many years while bile is removed for use in traditional medicine.
Vietnam has pledged to end the practice completely, with Animals Asia working to save the remaining farmed bears and move them into sanctuaries. There, rescued bears receive veterinary care and long-term rehabilitation to help them heal from years of confinement and slowly relearn natural behaviors.
Support from donations like Gervais’s helps fund rescue operations, medical treatment, and the lifetime sanctuary housing needed for bears that have spent most, or all, of their lives in captivity.
Gervais has often spoken out against bear bile farming, describing it as one of the cruellest practices harming animals today. His continued financial support has helped bring worldwide attention to the issue and speed up rescue efforts.

My 10-year-old grandson wanted shelters for stray dogs, so I helped him build them in my yard. I’m Paul, his grandpa. I’ve seen this side of Owen since he was little. He always notices animals—leaves water out, points at paw prints in the snow, worries when it gets cold. Last winter, the temperature dropped fast. Owen looked at the dogs near our fence and said, “They won’t make it like this.” Then he came to me with a plan. He didn’t ask for toys or screens. He asked to build something warm. So we built simple tunnel shelters that catch sunlight during the day and keep heat overnight. That first night, dogs went inside and stayed. Animal volunteers later told us the shelters help prevent hypothermia. I’ve built many things in my life—but watching my grandson care this much made me proud in a way I won’t forget.
