🩺 Getting the Right Care, Faster: Who to See at Your GP Surgery 👥✨

Monday mornings are often our busiest time for appointment requests. To help you get seen by the right specialist as quickly as possible, our team includes a wide range of healthcare professionals—meaning a GP isn't always the only (or quickest) person to help!

🏃‍♂️ First Contact Physiotherapists: Direct assessment and rehabilitation plans for joint, neck, back, or muscular pain without needing a GP referral first.

💊 Clinical Pharmacists: Expert medication reviews, help with side effects, prescription queries, and synchronising your repeat medications.

🩺 Practice Nurses & Healthcare Assistants: Routine blood tests, blood pressure checks, wound dressings, asthma/diabetes reviews, and vaccinations.

👨‍⚕️ General Practitioners (GPs): Complex conditions, multiple long-term health issues, unresolving symptoms, and specialized referrals.

💡 Top Tip: When our reception team or online triage form asks for a brief outline of your symptoms, it’s completely confidential and ensures you are booked directly with the right expert the first time!

🌅 Easing into the new week: Beating the Sunday evening slump 🧠✨

Sunday evenings can often bring a wave of anticipation and stress about the week ahead. Taking just 15 minutes tonight to reset can make Monday morning feel far more manageable:

📝 Brain-dump your to-do list: Getting tasks out of your head and onto paper frees up mental space before sleep.

🫖 Create a wind-down boundary: Swap late-night screen scrolling for a warm drink, stretching, or reading.

🎯 Pick just one priority for tomorrow: Instead of trying to tackle everything at 9 AM, choose your single most important goal.

🚨 Need urgent medical or mental health help tonight?

For non-emergency advice while we are closed, visit 111.wales.nhs.uk or call 111.

For urgent mental health support, call 111 and press Option 2 for 24/7 access to a dedicated mental health practitioner.

For life-threatening emergencies, always dial 999.

Wishing our community a restful evening and a healthy week ahead! 💙

🌿 Friday Reset: 3 Small Habits for a Healthier Weekend 🌿

With the weekend just around the corner, it's easy to let healthy routines slide. Setting yourself up for a good break doesn't take massive lifestyle overhauls—just a few simple resets can make a huge difference to how you feel by Monday:

💧 Hydrate before you caffeinate: Drink a full glass of water first thing in the morning to kickstart your energy levels and digestion.

🚶 Get 20 minutes of fresh air: A brisk walk outside helps lower cortisol (stress hormones), supports cardiovascular health, and improves sleep quality.

🧘 Unplug before bed: Switch off screens 30–45 minutes before sleep to let your brain naturally wind down.

Taking care of your physical and mental wellbeing starts with the small, everyday choices.

👉 What’s one healthy habit you’re making time for this weekend? Let us know below! 👇

Whitchurch Road Surgery – Monthly Activity Update (June 2026)

Here is a look at what our team handled across the surgery this past month:

📞 3,753 Telephone calls answered

💊 2,047 Prescription items issued

📋 86 Specialist referrals processed

📝 78 Fit notes issued

⚠️ Did Not Attend (DNA) Notice:

During June, 531 appointments were missed without prior cancellation. This means 19.3% (nearly 1 in 5) of all available appointment slots went unused — an increase of 94 missed appointments compared to May.

What does this mean for our practice?

Lost Access: 531 appointments could have been offered to patients waiting for urgent or routine care.

Clinical Time: That equates to roughly 88+ hours of clinician time lost in a single month.

Financial Impact: Across an entire year, this level of missed appointments equates to an estimated £190,000 – £250,000 in wasted NHS resources.

How you can help us:
If you no longer need an appointment or cannot make it, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer that slot to someone else in need.

Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation!

Myth vs. fact: Student Health Edition 🧠🩺

Moving away for uni comes with a long to-do list, and health admin is usually at the very bottom. Let’s clear up a few common misconceptions:

❌ "I can just stay registered with my family GP back home."

✔️ Fact: If you get unwell during term time, your home GP cannot easily examine you, issue same-day local prescriptions, or refer you to local NHS services.

❌ "Registration is instant when I get sick."

✔️ Fact: Processing NHS registrations takes several days. Sorting it out when you have a 39°C fever is the last thing you want to do.

❌ "I'm young and never get sick."

✔️ Fact: Close halls of residence + crowded lecture theatres = peak season for Freshers’ Flu, norovirus, and seasonal bugs.

❌ "It costs money to register."

✔️ Fact: NHS GP registration is 100% free.

⏱️ Take 5 minutes while drinking your morning coffee to register online today.
