This is Adele. Adele is a Mental Health Nurse Specialist within Acute Child Health, based at Noahâs Ark Childrenâs Hospital of Wales. She trained as a childrenâs nurse 25 years ago. âIt's always been my passion to be a nurse,â she said. âI've got pictures of me when I was very young dressed as a nurse!â
Working in the Childrenâs Hospital, Adele noticed a need to improve mental health support for children and young people, which led her to complete additional training as a mental health nurse.
Her role was created after she identified a gap in care. âThere was a real gap between inpatient and outpatient care, and I felt there was a need to bridge the gap. I advise, support and look after young people who come into the Childrenâs Hospital with mental health needs or who are in mental health crisis,â she explains. âI work closely with the Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health team, and Iâm the link for them to come in and see the young person.â
At the heart of Adeleâs work is improving care and reducing stigma. âI listen, I support and I signpost children, young people, families, carers and staff. Mental health for children and young people is talked about much more openly now, but when I started this role around 15 years ago, it wasnât really. Educating people on ending stigma has been a vital part of my role.â
Whether revising paperwork, improving guidelines or supporting young people to get from admission to discharge safely with the best possible care, Adele focuses on making the hospital experience better. âIf I can make that journey better, that means that a young person may seek help again if they need it.â
Diolch Adele. đ
