This is Dr Rachel Drayton, a Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine (Sexual Health) and HIV. Rachel also plays a key role in promoting environmental sustainability within the Health Board, as the Clinical Lead for Decarbonisation.

This week Rachel has organised screenings of a powerful 45-minute film presented by Chris Packham called The People's Emergency Briefing. It is an opportunity for Health Board staff to engage with scientific evidence presented by leading experts about the climate and nature crisis and its impact on health and everyday life. The screenings are taking place in University Hospital of Wales, University Hospital Llandough, Cardiff Royal Infirmary and Woodland House.

Rachel said: "Extreme weather is already impacting the health of the communities we serve and putting increased pressure on health services. Sometimes it is easier not to engage with these difficult issues, but this is what makes action not happen. This film, along with a short, facilitated discussion afterwards, aims to help us move beyond anxiety to taking positive action for the future." 🌍

Many community pharmacists across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan are independent prescribers.

This means that you can go directly to your local pharmacy and be assessed by a prescribing pharmacist for common conditions such as ear infections, sore throats and skin conditions. The pharmacist, if appropriate, can prescribe medication without you needing to contact your GP practice.

To find Community Pharmacies offering the service near you, visit the NHS 111 Wales site, click on Services and select ‘Independent Prescribing for Common Ailments and Contraception’ in the filter column along with your postcode. This will also tell you how to check for availability as you may need to phone ahead or book an appointment online. 🔗 ⬇️

You don’t always need to see your GP or visit the Emergency Unit for urgent eye problems. 👁️

High street opticians run a range of NHS services and can diagnose, manage and treat eye conditions directly in-store.

A local optometrist can offer an urgent eye examination if you’re experiencing minor eye injuries, red or infected eyes, a foreign body in the eye or sudden changes in vision.

An urgent eye examination is more in-depth than a routine sight test and is completely free under the NHS.

Next time you require urgent eye care, phone or walk into your closest opticians to receive expert and convenient care in the community.

This is Adele. Adele is a Mental Health Nurse Specialist within Acute Child Health, based at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital of Wales. She trained as a children’s nurse 25 years ago. “It's always been my passion to be a nurse,” she said. “I've got pictures of me when I was very young dressed as a nurse!”

Working in the Children’s Hospital, Adele noticed a need to improve mental health support for children and young people, which led her to complete additional training as a mental health nurse.

Her role was created after she identified a gap in care. “There was a real gap between inpatient and outpatient care, and I felt there was a need to bridge the gap. I advise, support and look after young people who come into the Children’s Hospital with mental health needs or who are in mental health crisis,” she explains. “I work closely with the Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health team, and I’m the link for them to come in and see the young person.”

At the heart of Adele’s work is improving care and reducing stigma. “I listen, I support and I signpost children, young people, families, carers and staff. Mental health for children and young people is talked about much more openly now, but when I started this role around 15 years ago, it wasn’t really. Educating people on ending stigma has been a vital part of my role.”

Whether revising paperwork, improving guidelines or supporting young people to get from admission to discharge safely with the best possible care, Adele focuses on making the hospital experience better. “If I can make that journey better, that means that a young person may seek help again if they need it.”

Diolch Adele. 💙

Anyone could be an unpaid carer, a 15-year-old looking after a parent with and alcohol problem, a 20-year-old looking after a sibling with a mental health condition, a 40-year-old caring for their friend who has terminal cancer, a parent looking after a child with a disability, or an 80-year-old looking after their partner who has dementia.

This week is Carers Week, and this year's theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities. In support of this, our Patient Experience team is holding information stands at University Hospital Llandough, which will be open to anyone who would like to access information or advice on the support available to them as an unpaid carer:

•Tuesday 9th June, 10am-12pm – Outpatients Department Reception, joined by TuVida
•Wednesday 10th June, 10am-12pm – Hafan y Coed Reception, joined by Adferiad.

An information display will also be available within the information and support centre in Concourse of University Hospital of Wales all week for anyone unable to attend the stands at University Hospital Llandough.

Visit the website for more information.

For Annette Brown, Live Well Age Well has been about far more than exercise.

The free NHS course for over-50s helps people stay active, improves their wellbeing and connects them with others in their community through weekly sessions focused on healthy ageing.

Annette, 79, praised the support and encouragement from the rehabilitation coaches, saying participants are given advice on everything from nutrition and sleep, to staying safe and preventing falls.

“We’re all mixing with people who have the same mindset,” she said.

Last weekend marked a landmark for the Health Board as the roll out of the new electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) software was completed in the Women's Unit in the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) and Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales. The system allows staff to make use of mobile technology, barcode scanning and clinical decision support to electronically prescribe and administer medicines, improving patient care and experience.

This implementation follows a busy few months with successful go lives in UHW during November, University Hospital Llandough in January and Mental Health settings in March. The Emergency Unit are also live, allowing the system to be utilised from the moment that patients are seen.
