September is Su***de Prevention Month.

And for parents whose child died by su***de, those words can hurt in ways other people may never understand.

Because everywhere you look, there are reminders to watch for the signs.
Ask the questions.
Make the call.
Check in.
Speak up.
Save a life.

All important. All necessary.

But when your child is already gone, those messages can turn into something else entirely.

Did I miss something?
Should I have known?
What if I had called that day?
What if I had asked one more question?
What if I had done something differently?

And a month intended to save lives can quietly become a month of blaming yourself for the life you could not save.

So we need to say this, too.

You knew your child as you knew them then—not with everything you know now.

You loved them.

You tried.

And you do not have to spend the rest of your life putting yourself on trial for a tragedy you would have done anything to prevent.

This month, we will talk about su***de prevention.

But we will also talk about the people who died.

Not as statistics.
Not as cautionary stories.
Not simply as someone who died by su***de.

They were funny and complicated and stubborn and brilliant and ordinary.

They had favorite songs and inside jokes.
They irritated people. They made people laugh.
They had birthdays and bad habits and dreams and people who would give anything to hear their voice again.

They were here.
They were loved.
They mattered.

And the way they died will never define the life they lived. 💜🩵

For many people this week is back to work, back to school or back to college.

It’s often a time of change and new beginnings, a new term, new job, new school year, perhaps starting university or a moving away from home.

It’s also a chance for a new start, a fresh perspective, new goals, personal or professional.

Whatever the autumn terms brings to you , may you enjoy new adventures and new beginnings

Things change so much when your child dies, life can sometimes feel unrecognisable.

Life becomes full of contrasts, discovering it’s possible to feel two conflicting emotions at the same time for instance happy in the moment yet sad they are not here to share that experience, loving one child whilst simultaneously missing the other.

All of this is “normal” in grief

Don’t compare your life to those around you, focus on maintaining bonds with your loved one through memories, actions, rituals and conversations.

You choose the relationship you have with them now and what signs you see and acknowledge 🕊️

sketches shares the best posts that follow through the seasons

September can feel like a reset or a new start as summer fades and the new season, new term or new quarter begins .

What do you want to focus on? For me personally I need to focus on my health by eating more healthily and moving more.
I’m also going to prioritise time for reading and personal development .

What are you going to achieve in the next few months?

It has taken time, so much time to come to terms with what happened in our lives when Matthew chose to end his.

It felt wrong to smile, to feel happiness, to celebrate anything in our lives. Everything was tinged with guilt and regret for things said and unsaid, for the lost future we had expected to have.

Now it’s getting easier to focus on celebrating Matthew’s life and all he brought to ours. Time has allowed us not to accept his death, but to get used to what has happened and learn to accommodate that loss in our lives.

Each year we celebrate his birthday with friends and family, share memories and stories and the joy he brought to our lives.

Memories and photos are all we have left, and the love we hold for Matthew always in our hearts.
