What is an Acu-nap??

Deep Relaxation: It is a brief, surprisingly heavy sleep that happens while the treatment needles are doing their work.

Brain Activity: Acupuncture helps shift brain waves into resting patterns, which lowers stress and makes you feel sleepy.

Restorative Effect: Falling asleep is as a sign that your nervous system is deeply letting go and healing.

In my opinion, the best nap!😀 And some of my clients would agree with me đŸ„°.

I’ve just made some Moxa foot soaks and dropped them off to a family member who has recently had knee surgery.

Moxa foot soaks can help with:

Improved Circulation: The thermal properties of mugwort deeply pe*****te tissues, stimulating blood flow in the legs.

Pain Reduction: The combination of heat and herbs interacts with meridians to soothe aching muscles and reduce overall resting pain following surgery. The increased circulation can alleviate muscle soreness, joint stiffness by promoting the healthy flow of qi and blood

Reduced Swelling: Warm soaks help resolve fluid retention and inflammation, which is common in the weeks following surgery.

Enhanced Joint Function: By reducing muscle stiffness and supporting quad strength, these therapies can accelerate the time it takes to regain your range of motion and mobility.

Other benefits are:

Stress Reduction: Soaking your feet just before bed calms the nervous system and draws excess energy away from the mind. This makes it a popular ritual for combating fatigue and promoting deep, restful sleep which can be difficult after surgery.

Organ Support: Six major energy meridians—including the kidney, liver, and spleen—run through the feet. Stimulating these pathways helps strengthen organ function.

What is Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia is a chronic, unexplained pain or discomfort in the v***a that lasts longer than three months, without an identifiable cause. It is characterised by sensations of burning, stinging, throbbing or raw soreness.

There are two types of Vulvodynia. They are classified based on where the pain originates.

Localised Vulvodynia: Most of the time, pain is isolated to one spot, like your v***a vestibule or cl****is. Localised Vulvodynia is sometimes called localised v***a pain syndrome.

Generalised Vulvodynia: Sometimes, the pain isn’t isolated to one spot. Instead, you may feel pain in different parts of your v***a and/or va**na at different times. You may feel pain throughout your v***a.

Vulvodynia could be provoked and unprovoked. In provoked Vulvodynia, you feel pain with touch or activity. With unprovoked Vulvodynia, you feel pain without these factors.

Vulvodynia can be so stressful that it’s life-altering.

With Vulvodynia you can have pain from sitting for too long which can make it challenging to do your job.

The difficulty or impossibility of s*xual in*******se can damage relationships.

You may have a harder time falling and/or staying asleep.

Acupuncture helps manage Vulvodynia by downregulating an overactive nervous system, relaxing hypertonic pelvic floor muscles and promoting local blood flow. Acupuncture is increasingly recognised as a biologically active, drug-free therapy to provide lasting pain relief for chronic v***a discomfort. And, in some cases, acupuncture for Vulvodynia can negate the necessity for pharmaceutical medication.

Nerve and Pain Modulation: Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, along with neurotransmitters like serotonin, which help block pain signals and regulate mood.

Pelvic Muscle Relaxation: Vulvodynia often involves chronic tension or spasms of the pelvic floor muscles. Needling specific points around the pelvis and sacrum helps relieve muscle hypertonicity and reduce spasms.

Increased Microcirculation: By improving localised blood flow, acupuncture promotes tissue healing and helps reduce chronic inflammation in the v***a.

Autonomic Nervous System Regulation: Stress and nervous system dysregulation can significantly exacerbate v***a pain. Acupuncture shifts the body from the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state to the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state, easing the physical and emotional distress associated with chronic pain.

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system by activating sensory nerve fibers, which send signals to the brain and spinal cord to trigger the release of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. It is highly effective at balancing the autonomic nervous system, promoting a shift from “fight-or-flight” (sympathetic) to “rest-and-digest” (parasympathetic) mode to reduce stress. It can help to treat anxiety, chronic pain, and various neurological disorders.

Key Impacts on the Nervous System
-Autonomic Balancing: Acupuncture modulates the autonomic nervous system by regulating heart rate, blood pressure, and reducing stress.
-Vagus Nerve Activation: It stimulates the vagus nerve, which is crucial for reducing inflammation and encouraging relaxation.
-Brain Chemistry & Plasticity: Research indicates that acupuncture increases blood flow to specific brain regions and promotes brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
-Pain Modulation: It acts on the nervous system to inhibit pain signals, acting as a natural painkiller.

Commonly Treated Nervous System Conditions
-Anxiety and Stress: By calming the nervous system, it lowers stress hormones and promotes a sense of calm.
-Sleep Disorders: It aids in improving sleep quality.
-Chronic Pain/Neurological Disorders: Effective for conditions like migraines, tension headaches and sciatica.

How It Works
-Sensory Stimulation: Needles activate peripheral nerves, sending messages to the central nervous system.
-Neurotransmitter Release: Triggers the release of calming chemicals and endorphins.
-Signal Pathways: Affects synaptic plasticity and acts as an anti-inflammatory in the brain.

Endometriosis is a chronic, often painful condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it—commonly on ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, and pelvic tissue—affecting 1 in 10 women. This tissue acts like the uterine lining, bleeding during the menstrual cycle, causing inflammation, scar tissue, pain, and potential fertility issues.

* Symptoms: Severe menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea), chronic pelvic pain, pain during/after s*x, painful bowel movements or urination, heavy periods, fatigue, and infertility.
* Causes: The exact cause is unknown, but it is a hormone-dependent disease.
* Diagnosis & Treatment: While there is no cure, treatments include pain medication, hormone therapy (e.g., birth control), and surgery to remove endometriosis tissue.
* Impact: Beyond physical pain, it can lead to emotional distress, anxiety, and depression.

Acupuncture shows promise as a safe, complementary therapy for managing endometriosis symptoms, particularly for reducing chronic pelvic pain and painful periods (dysmenorrhea). It works by stimulating the nervous system, releasing endorphins, decreasing inflammation, and potentially lowering CA-125 levels. Evidence suggests it can improve quality of life and may help with associated infertility.

Key Benefits and Evidence:
* Pain Reduction: Studies indicate that acupuncture can be effective in reducing pain severity, with some research showing it to be as effective as, or more effective than, certain Western medications.
* Inflammation Control: It helps reduce serum CA-125 levels, a marker associated with high levels of inflammation in endometriosis patients.
* Hormonal Balance: Acupuncture may help regulate cycles and suppress serum estradiol, which can help inhibit the growth of endometrial tissue.
* Systemic Support: It is often used to address associated issues like digestive problems, bloating, and stress.

The winner of the Paying It Forward prize has been selected using a number generator. They have been informed privately.

Thank you to everyone that shared this post, sent me their stories and nominated loved ones. Some of the stories I’ve been sent are incredibly moving. I know that fertility issues can be a long and lonely road for some. I am grateful to have the opportunity to help at least one person on their journey.

Thank you to everyone else who contacted me, I hope that your individual journeys have a positive outcome.

After being on my own fertility journey, I know how expensive it can be to seek alternative treatments. I had an amazing therapist Lauren Temple at Holistic Beauty Lounge who helped me before, during and after my fertility treatments.
I would love to pay her kindness and generosity forward and offer a free course of treatment which will include acupuncture, moxibustion and Korean hand therapy.
If you are on your fertility journey and would like the chance to win this, please direct message me (all applicants will be kept confidential) and I will pick a person at random on the 31st of January.
