What happens during your first appointment?
Your first appointment begins with an unhurried conversation. We will talk about your surgery and treatment history, how your scar currently feels and any changes you have noticed in your comfort or movement.
You will have time to explain your concerns and ask questions without feeling rushed.
We may look at how the scar and surrounding tissues move and discuss what you would most like support with. I will explain everything before beginning and make sure you feel comfortable throughout.
If treatment is appropriate, it will be gentle and carefully adapted to your body and where you are in your recovery.
You remain in control at all times. Nothing is done without your understanding and consent.
If possible, you are welcome to send me a brief history of your cancer journey before attending. This helps me understand what you have experienced and means you do not have to feel rushed when you arrive.

Recovery is not always a straight line.
Some days you may notice progress, while on other days your body may feel tighter, more tired or more sensitive. This does not necessarily mean you are going backwards.
Recovery after surgery, cancer treatment or radiotherapy can take time. Your body has been through a great deal, and healing does not follow the same timetable for everyone.
Be patient with yourself. Notice the small improvements, listen to your body and remember that needing additional support is not a sign that you have failed.
At Peace Massage Therapy, you are treated as a whole person—not simply as a scar or a symptom.
If something still feels uncomfortable or restricted, you are welcome to contact me for a friendly, unhurried chat.

It is never “just a scar.”

A scar can represent surgery, treatment, recovery and everything a person has experienced along the way.

Although a scar may look healed on the surface, you may still experience tightness, pulling, sensitivity, numbness or changes in movement. It can also carry emotions and memories that other people cannot see.

Scar therapy is not about changing your story or making a scar disappear. It is about gently supporting the tissues, improving comfort and helping you feel more at ease in your body.

You deserve to have your concerns listened to and your recovery treated with care and respect.

If your scar continues to affect your comfort or movement, you are welcome to get in touch for a friendly, unhurried chat.

Is Oncology Scar Therapy painful?

This is a question many people understandably ask.

Oncology Scar Therapy is a gentle treatment. It does not involve forcing, digging deeply into the scar or working through pain.

Treatment is carefully adapted to your scar, your medical history and how the area feels on the day. I regularly check that you are comfortable, and you remain in control throughout your appointment.

Some areas may feel tender, numb or different following surgery or radiotherapy, so we work slowly and respectfully, allowing the tissues time to respond.

The aim is to support comfort and movement—not to cause further discomfort.

If you feel nervous or are unsure whether treatment is suitable for you, you are welcome to contact me for a friendly chat before booking.

Every scar—and every person—is different.

Your surgery, treatment and recovery are personal to you. That is why scar therapy should never be a “one treatment fits all” approach.

Before treatment, we take time to talk about your health history, how your scar feels and any changes you have noticed in your comfort or movement.

Your treatment is then carefully adapted to:

• Your type and age of scar
• The area of the body affected
• Any tenderness or altered sensation
• Your current comfort and movement
• What feels right for you

The work is gentle, respectful and always guided by how your body responds.

If you would like to know whether scar therapy may be suitable for you, you are welcome to get in touch for a friendly, unhurried chat.

Can scar tissue affect movement elsewhere in the body?

Our bodies are all connected. When scar tissue feels tight or restricted, the body may begin to compensate by changing the way we move.

For example, a scar around the chest or breast may contribute to tightness through the shoulder or arm. An abdominal scar may affect how freely the body twists, bends or stands upright.

You might notice:

Pulling during certain movements
Reduced flexibility
Shoulder, arm or chest tightness
Changes in posture
Discomfort away from the scar itself

Gentle scar therapy looks beyond the visible scar and considers how the surrounding tissues and movement may have been affected.

Every treatment is personalised to your body, your scar and your recovery.

If a scar is affecting your comfort or movement, you are welcome to get in touch for a friendly chat.

Why might a scar feel tight or “stuck”?

As the body heals after surgery, it creates scar tissue. Sometimes this tissue can become less flexible or attach to the layers underneath.

You may notice:

Tightness or pulling
Tenderness or sensitivity
Numbness or altered sensation
Restricted movement
A feeling that the skin is “stuck”

Gentle scar therapy may help improve the movement of the tissue, reduce feelings of restriction and support greater comfort.

Every scar is different, so treatment is always adapted carefully to you and your recovery.

If your scar still feels tight or uncomfortable, you are welcome to get in touch for a friendly chat.

Can an old scar still benefit from treatment?

Yes—scar tissue can sometimes continue to feel tight, sensitive or restricted many years after surgery or radiotherapy.

Gentle scar therapy may help to soften restricted tissue, improve comfort and support easier movement. Every scar and every person is different, so each treatment is carefully adapted to you.

If an old scar still feels tight, uncomfortable or affects how you move, you are welcome to get in touch for a friendly chat.
