If that is you, hot stones is the other route. Smooth basalt stones are warmed and worked slowly over the back and shoulders, and the heat does what pressure would otherwise have to force: the muscle softens on its own before anybody leans on it. Nothing about it is sharp. Most people are half asleep by the twenty minute mark.

Reflexology £45 for an hour works only on the feet, using pressure points along the sole, and people who stand all week tend to leave walking differently to how they came in. If you want the longer version, the Thai Foot Spa runs 90 minutes at £70 and takes in the lower legs as well, which is where the ache usually ends up by Thursday.

Most people who come to us can point at where it hurts. Far fewer of them are pointing at where the problem started, and that gap is the most useful thing we have learned in ten years of doing this.

A tension headache is the clearest example. It arrives behind the eyes or across the forehead, so that is where the hand goes. The muscles actually generating it are usually at the base of the skull and along the top of the shoulders, pulled tight by hours of holding a head forward over a screen or a steering wheel. Work on the forehead and the ache stays put. Work where the tightness is anchored and the headache often lifts on its own.

Lower back pain does the same trick in reverse. It announces itself in the lower back, and the hips and the backs of the legs have quietly been getting shorter for months, tilting the pelvis and leaving the back to hold everything together. Treating only the sore part treats the complaint rather than the cause.

This is why the first few minutes of a session here involve questions rather than hands. What do you do all day. Which side do you sleep on. When did it start, and what were you doing that week. The answers change where we begin.

By Tuesday afternoon the right shoulder has usually made itself known. It sits higher than the left one, a band of tightness runs from it into the neck, and turning your head to reverse the car reminds you it is there. 💻

That is what a week at a keyboard does, and it is the most common thing people walk in here with. The mouse hand holds the shoulder forward, the screen pulls the chin out, and those muscles spend eight hours holding a position they were built to pass through.
