This week we explore Svadhyaya, one of the Niyamas, often translated as self-study or self-reflection.
For me, this is one of the most powerful parts of yoga, both on and off the mat.
On the mat, it’s about practising with awareness rather than moving mindlessly. Instead of simply following instructions, notice how your body feels, how your mind responds, and what you truly need in that moment. Yoga isn’t about forcing yourself into a pose; it’s about listening.
Off the mat, Svadhyaya becomes even more important. It’s about observing our thoughts, habits and patterns. Why do we react the way we do? Why are we feeling a certain emotion? Are our beliefs truly our own, or are they being shaped by the constant influence of social media, news and the people around us?
The more we pause, reflect and become curious about ourselves, the more choice we have in how we respond to life. That awareness doesn’t just transform our practice—it transforms how we show up in the world.
This week, take a little time to observe rather than judge. You might be surprised by what you discover.
