Lughnasadh blessings 🌾
The Celtic wheel of the year turns again and we welcome Lughnasadh, a cross quarter harvest festival. It is the first harvest and we celebrate Lugh, the god of the sun, The shining one , the light and harvest.
The name Lugh translates to light or brightness and he was associated with the blazing sun and solar radiance.
He was a member of the supernatural race the Tuatha Dé Danann and this festival was named in his honor, originally it was created by him to commemorate his foster-mother Tailtiu.
She used her great power to chop down the thick forests so the land could be used for farming and growing food. Grief-stricken by her death, Lugh organized a grand funeral feast and athletic games, this event was to thank Tailtiu for making the harvest possible.
It falls half way between summer and autumn and is a time to pause and be grateful for the abundance growing in and around us.
It is an opportunity to give thanks for the abundance of the Earth and to reflect on the fruits of our own labour.
The warm sun has turned the crops in the field from green to gold, the hedgerows begin to offer their gifts so reflect upon ✨where have you grown ✨what has ripened in your life
✨what intentions planted earlier in the year are ready to harvest ???
It’s also a reminder that our ancestors didn’t push through this season, they paused and marked it. They gathered, gave thanks for what had grown and acknowledged what hadn’t, without trying to fix it!!
May every harvest remind you that even the smallest seeds can grow into extra ordinary blessings and may your harvest be bountiful to sustain you through the cold winter months ahead!!
