🧠Your Nervous System🧠

Your nervous system controls everything: pain, movement, sleep, digestion, mood, immunity.

If your nervous system is stuck in “threat mode, "nothing else works. Here’s how to improve it:

1️⃣Activate Your Vagus Nerve
•Slow, deep breathing (long exhales)
•Humming or singing
•Cold water on your face
•Gentle neck stretches

2️⃣Micr Intelligently
•Start slow, progress gradually, focus on quality. Stop before pain increases.

3️⃣Manage Stress
•Identify stressors, set boundaries, practice relaxation, spend time in nature.

4️⃣Prioritize Sleep
•Consistent schedule, dark room, no screens 1 hour before bed, limit caffeine after 2pm.

5️⃣Address Your Sensory System
•Eye tracking, balance drills, vestibular exercises, reduce sensory overload.

6️⃣Improve Nutrition
•Omega-3s, B vitamins, magnesium. Reduce inflammatory foods.

7️⃣Build Social Connection
•Loneliness keeps your nervous system in threat mode. Connection activates safety.

8️⃣Practice Consistency
•Small, daily actions beat occasional big efforts. Your nervous system changes through repetition.

**When your nervous system improves**
✔️Pain decreases
✔️Movement improves
✔️Sleep gets better
✔️Digestion normalizes
✔️Mood lifts
✔️Energy increases
✔️Immunity strengthens

The bottom line: Improving your nervous system isn’t one magic fix. It’s creating an environment that where your body feel safe enough to heal.

Start today. Takes 5 minutes. Do the 4-7-8 breathing techniques. Notice how your body feels.

That’s nervous system improvement in action

Movement quality > Strength

Most riders focus on getting stronger.

But here’s the truth ~ a weak rider with good movement quality will outrider a stronger rider with poor movement quality.

This is because movement quality comes from nervous system control.

A well coordinated nervous system = smooth, efficient and balanced movement.

A dysregulated nervous system = choppy, inefficient and unbalanced movement.

Traditional rider fitness = strength training that will build muscles but doesn’t teach your nervous system how to use it efficiently.

The neurocentric approach = train your nervous system to move well and when your brain learns efficient movement patterns everything will improve.

We help riders develop neurocentric movements quality!!!

Did your know your brain controls your seat

Here’s something most riders don’t realise ~ your seat quality isn’t about strength or flexibility.

It’s about nervous system control.

Your brain controls:
✔️Muscle tension and relaxation
✔️Balance and stability
✔️Coordination and timing
✔️Sensitivity and feel

A strong nervous system = a stable, sensitiv, communicative seat.

A dysregulated nervous system = tension, gripping, poor feeling and miscommunication with your horse.

Traditional rider fitness focuses on strength. That misses the point.

The neurocentric approach ~ Trains your nervous system to control your seat. When your brain learns proper seat control everything else will improve.

Better balance, better communication, better results.

We help riders develop neurocentric seat control!!!

Horse nervous system: The riders horse connection

Here’s something most riders don’t realize: your nervous system directly affects your horses nervous system.

This is called co-regulation.

When you’re calm, confident and grounded your horse picks up on it. Their nervous system regulates and the become calm and responsive.

When you’re tense, anxious or uncertain your horse picks up on it. Their nervous system dysregulates and they become tense and reactive.

This happens through subtle cues such as your breathing, muscle tension, energy and your seat.

Your horse is constantly reading your nervous system state.

The neurocentric perspective ~ You can’t train your horse effectively if your own nervous system is dysregulated.

The fix ~ Regulate your own nervous systems first. When your calm and connected your horses nervous system will naturally regulate.

We help riders understand the rider horse nervous system connection and how to use it to create calm and responsive horse.

Horse nervous system: The vagus nerve connection

Your horses vagus nerve is the key to a calm and responsive nervous system.

The vagus nerve controls:
✔️Heart rate and breathing
✔️Digestion and relaxation
✔️Emotional regulation
✔️Movement quality
✔️Learning and memory

A healthy vagus nerve = a calm, confident and responsive horse.

A dysregulated vagus nerve = a tense, reactive unpredictable horse.

Here’s the thing - your horses vagus nerve responds to your nervous system state.

If you’re tense and anxious your horse picks up on it. Their vagus nerve dysregulates and they become tenses and reactive.

If you’re calm and confident your horse picks up on it and their vagus nerve will regulate and become calm and responsive.

The neurocentric approach - regulate your own nervous system first. When you’re calm and connected your horses nervous system naturally regulates

We help riders understand the vagus nerve and how to use it to create calm and responsive horse.

Your horses nervous system: The hidden key to performance

Most riders focus on training the horses body.

But here’s what they miss - your horses nervous systems controls everything.

Movement quality, responsiveness, confidence, relaxation and it all comes down to how your horses nervous system is functioning.

A calm, regulated nervous system = a responsive confidence horse.

A stressed, dysregulated nervous system = a tense reactive horse.

The neurocentric perspective? You can’t train a horses body effectively if their nervous system is in flight or fight mode. You have to calm and regulate the nervous system first.

How? Through clear communication, consistent cues and understanding what triggers your horses protective patterns.

When your horses nervous system is calm and regulated they then become responsive, willing and confident.

We help riders understand and work with their horses nervous systems.

Horse nervous system: Protective patterns & behavior

Your horse’s behavior is driven by their nervous system.

When your horse feels threatened (real or perceived) their nervous system activates protective patterns such as:

✔️Spooking and bolting
✔️Bucking and rearing
✔️Refusing to move
✔️Tension and stiffness
✔️Poor focus and attention

These aren’t “bad behavior” they are protective patterns.

Your horses nervous system is trying to keep them safe.

The problem? Many riders try to train through protective patterns. They use force pressure or punishment to override the behavior.

This doesn’t work. It actually makes the nervous system more dysregulated and the protective patterns stronger.

The neurocentric approach? Understand what triggers your horses protective patterns. Calm and regulated their nervous system and when the nervous system is calm the protective patterns naturally disappear.

We help riders understand their horses protective patterns and how to work with their nervous system.

How does your brain work? and why does it matter for my riding?

Step 1- Our body takes in information : *Input*
Step 2- Decides what to do with it : *Interpretation*
Step 3- Then sending information out to make an action : *Output*

What does that mean?
Our body is constantly taking in information via a mix of our body systems. Once it has done this the brain can understand your environment, decide if you have experienced the situation before and predict how threatening the information in is. Once this has all been processed the brain send it signal out to make a movement based on the in previous steps.

Can you see how if steps 1 and 2 are not working well then your output (movements) will be compromised. If you have previous injury, compensations, scars, hormone imbalances, breathing conditions and lot lot more. these can all have a negative effect on steps one and 2 meaning they you will not be performing to your best.

Do you sleep well at night?

Did you know at night is when you brain cleaners it’s self and can reduce by up to 65% of size.

Poor sleep, poor cleansing.

Sleep issues are something we look into in our assessments. People can struggle to get to sleep, mid sleep waking for the loo, wearing early, feel unrested after a nights sleep, not enough hours.

These are all things I work on with riders to help improved their movement, balance and brain function.

In order for us to be able to sleep we need to be able to get our self into a parasympathetic state. This is our rest and digest state.

How do you get your self into a parasympathetic state?

Comment below

Breathing?
Tapping?
Meditation?
Mindfulness?
De-Stress?
Massage?

There’s loads of ways!
