shadow self is the part of us that contains thoughts, feelings, needs, fears and behaviours that we’ve learned to hide, suppress or reject—often because we were taught they were unacceptable.

The concept comes largely from Carl Jung, who described the “shadow” as aspects of ourselves that sit outside our conscious identity.

🌑 What can live in our shadow?

It isn’t necessarily “bad” things. It can include:

* Anger — especially if you were taught to always be nice.
* Jealousy — perhaps revealing insecurity, fear of losing someone, or an unmet need.
* Neediness — if you learned that needing people was weak.
* Control — sometimes developing when uncertainty feels unsafe.
* People-pleasing — suppressing your real opinions to avoid rejection.
* Ambition — if you were taught not to “think too highly of yourself.”
* Sexuality or sensuality — if expressing desire was discouraged.
* Confidence — sometimes even positive qualities get pushed into the shadow.
* Fear of abandonment — which can show up as checking, reassurance-seeking or withdrawing.
* Resentment — particularly when you repeatedly put everyone else’s needs firsT

PRACTICE DETACHMENT

One of the greatest lessons for your mental wellbeing is learning to practice non-attachment. It means accepting what comes into your life with gratitude and allowing it to leave when it’s no longer aligned, without trying to control or force it to stay. People are allowed to leave you. They’re allowed to end relationships, stop talking to you, choose their own happiness, move on, fall in love with someone else, or grow into the best version of themselves without you. As painful as those experiences can be, trying to hold on to someone who no longer wants to stay only creates more suffering. Peace comes from trusting that what is truly meant for you won’t require you to abandon yourself to keep it.

✨ Spend one full day doing only what YOU want. No people-pleasing. No guilt. Just notice what comes up.

✨ Go for a 30-minute walk without your phone. Pay attention to nature, your breathing, and the present moment.

✨ Write down three things you’re grateful for and three things you’re proud of yourself for today. We often celebrate too little and criticise ourselves too much.
