Too beautiful not to share…credit to OP.
This is Butterwalk.
He died today. When he transformed from a caterpillar to a butterfly, his wings were stuck together and never opened.
He was never destined to fly, hence his name.
My 13 year old Anaia was his death doula. She sat with him, loving him every day as he transitioned from the earth.
He was a little active in the first couple of days, crawling around slowly. But then he started dying.
Well thats what we thought.
On his ‘last day’ we made him the softest bed we could, and put him outside in the sunshine. We wanted him to feel the sun and hear the sounds of nature while he drifted away.
Every morning we went to check on him, still alive.
Ok.
Trooper.
Surely the next night will be his last.
Nope.
When we checked in the morning, he was laying there, body still, but legs moving slowly.
Hearty.
The next night a cold South Island frost came down from the hills. In the morning we went to collect his body ready for a burial.
I brought him inside so we could mourn him, and I hear a shriek from Anaia.
BUTTERWALK IS ALIVE!!!
Surely not!
She must be seeing things.
I ran over in disbelief, and he's lying there lifeless.
I blow gently on his body, and the bro starts moving his legs. Really slowly, but definitely still alive.
WTF!?
This guy really wants to live!!!
We fed him some sugar and banana and he was AWAY!
Within a few minutes he’s charging.
He got all adventurous and started climbing out of the container, climbing up the leaves.
He even leaped off our bookshelf twice, probably thinking he could fly.
This was the happiest we’d ever seen him.
Best moments of his life.
His enthusiasm for life made us all smile.
But sadly, today we found him dead.
He finally took the plunge to the afterlife.
I cried.
I’m not exactly sure why. But if I were to guess, it would be because he showed me that even though he was dealt a crap hand, he still made the most of it.
He dug deep and gave life his best shot, the only way he knew.
He literally persevered through cold and hunger. And then lived to see brighter days.
He had fun for a bit.
Even dared to jump off a cliff.
Twice.
He was only with us for a couple of weeks, but in that short time he taught us so much.
He taught me that no matter how tough life gets, to keep going, dig deep and never give up.
I’ll hold onto that for the rest of my life.
RIP Butterwalk
