Start the Conversation: Suicide Prevention Education

Start the Conversation: Suicide Prevention Education We teach people to talk about suicide to have a courageous conversation that could save a life.

04/08/2026

So you’re a manager. Or a team leader. Or a community creator. Maybe you’re a CEO.

People look to you to know what’s ok (and what’s not ok)

And, importantly, what’s SAFE (and not safe)

Is is safe (physically, emotionally psychologically safe) to talk about su***de in your workplace?

If not, let’s talk training.
Or find me at www.starttheconversation.uk

I’ve empowered thousands of people (including countless leadership teams) with the tools and confidence to have life saving conversations, BEFORE crisis, way upstream.

Before su***de thoughts become action.

And these skills need to start at the TOP, because saying it’s SAFE to talk about su***de gives a clear message to your team: YOU ARE IMPORTANT. You matter.

A little note: I’m “out of office” all of August so I’m writing and scheduling this in advance. My point? If you comment, I’ll love it but I won’t see your comment or be able to reply until September. I promise I’m not being rude! I’m just learning to rest properly.

Over on LinkedIn I’ve been pretty consistently sharing every week.. and this is my last chance until September so I didn’t want to skip this one.

Love again to for introducing me to this lovely ritual earlier this year.

I’d love to know: what are YOUR ?

1 - ACCIDENTAL COLOUR MATCHING

Does any joy compare to the joy of an accidental colour match?

Here’s a pic of me last Friday, accidentally matching at the (incredible) Nick Cave gig ❤️🩷

2 - MY MUM

My kind Mum Sue (AKA Nana Sushi or Nana Soup) has outdone herself this week, coming down to Brighton to look after Stan and sometimes his pals too, while we prep the house/van/business/life for a month away.

Mum is 76, showing little sign of slowing down, and generously shares her worldly knowledge and thoughtful touches everywhere she goes.

I know not everyone has support like this and I am so grateful for her and I probably don’t tell her enough. (I’ll message her now as she won’t see this!)

3 - OOO = ON

It’s official! I’m outta here, taking a proper break from my computer to immerse fully with my family, nature, the wider world, and my self.

Back, refreshed, from 3rd September.

If you are seeking TRAINING, email Julie ([email protected]) who is holding the fort with her very capable hands while I’m away.

If you are seeking SUPPORT, for yourself or someone else, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You can find support via www.starttheconversation.uk/get-help

Call 999 in an emergency, and Samaritans are available to listen 24/7 on 116 123. You don’t have to be in crisis to call this number.

As the world burns, wishing you moments of peace and glimmers of joy this summer.

We got this. Over and out.

Our city is covered in rainbows and love is in the air ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

It’s Brighton Pride weekend, and I never feel more PROUD to live here 🏳️‍🌈

But there’s something that we all need to know (and many people do, too often from painful experience):

LGBTQ+ people are *significantly* more likely to think about su***de, or to take their own life, than cisgender or heterosexual people.

(I’ve included some frightening facts and sources in this carousel)

Whatever your gender or sexuality, if you feel alone or unsafe, please tell someone.

Here are some places you will find support and love:

🌈 LGBT Foundation 0345 3 30 30 30
🌈 Switchboard LGBTQIA+ Support Line 0800 0119 100 (10am-10pm)
🌈 Not A Phase uplifting trans+ adults
🌈 akt
🌈 You Are Loved
🌈 Mermaids for trans+ and non binary young people and their families

And based in Brighton- but reaching nationwide:

🌈 Allsorts Youth Project
🌈 The Clare Project
🌈 Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard
🌈 LGBTQ Mental Health

What have I missed? What don’t I know?

Happy, safe, loving Pride to everyone in Brighton this weekend 🏳️‍🌈

And to our global LGBTQ+ community: you are loved, you are loved, you are loved ❤️

For once, I’m not going to say much.

(I’m very aware my posts can be a bit... wordy...)

Instead, today, I’ll let these screenshots do the talking.*

👇 THIS IS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO 👇

The training we provide helps to prevent su***des, one conversation at a time.

It’s hard to prove, of course, but “proof” like this is all I personally need to hear to put those pesky “am I doing enough? is it time for a change?” thoughts out of my head.

Our next ‘open’ dates are below.

ALL are welcome (and yes, that means YOU, because su***de is EVERYONE’S business, is it not? Or at least, it needs to be so.)

I needed to get this out today and hoping it marks a 180 switch for me….

Welcome to REACH IN, my new one-day programme teaching ‘everyday su***de prevention’

Shifting AWAY from the pressure to “reach out” when we are at our lowest, and refocussing on “reaching IN”

i.e. proactively STARTING the conversation when our gut is screaming (or indeed, whispering) to us that this person in front of us (our friend, family member, colleague, boss, stranger) is not OK.

So far, I’ve delivered ‘Reach In’ twice, to staff at:

- day centre for young people who are homeless
- domestic abuse refuge

Here are some of the things they have said:

“This training was so succinct direct and informative. Some on the best training I’ve had for these reasons.”

“A hard but important topic where I felt safely supported and encouraged to gain new skills and confidence to help people.”

“This was a fantastic training. Rose is brilliant at staying present, being compassionate, whilst also being humorous where appropriate. I feel much more confident to talk about su***de.”

“Fantastic training with a supportive facilitator. Really attentive to the needs of learners. Thank you Rose for considering my access needs and enquiring sensitively.”

If YOUR team needs to get more confident to BREAK the taboos and start life-saving conversations, you know where I am.

3 things I learnt from crunching into a parked car yesterday morning 🙈

1 - PEOPLE ARE GOOD

As I was shakily writing an apology note for the windscreen, giving my details, the driver came back. He had every right to be furious, but his first words were:

“Are you ok?”

(The first thing he said! I teach people to ask that! It felt so good to be on the receiving end of that gentle care.)

Then he said: Did anyone get hurt?
Then: It looks like it’ll still drive just fine.
Then: Do you need a hug?

It was only later when we switched numbers and took photos, I noticed his scrubs. Turns out he’s a cancer nurse, caring for one of my dear friends. Small world.

2 - BETTER SPACIAL AWARENESS

Despite having had some super intrepid adventures, I’ve never been a confident driver. I’m nervous behind the wheel, sometimes hesitant. I’m working on that.

So my best mate knew exactly what to say to cheer me up yesterday when she said:

“This is great news mate! Your special awareness when you’re driving the van is gonna be BRILLIANT after this!”

3 - SLOW THE FK DOWN

I wasn’t rushing when it happened. I’d just been to a flipping blissed-out yoga class on the beach for godsake!

I wasn’t rushing, but I WAS distracted. I was carrying a lot (aren’t we all?) Tired. Thinking about seventeen other things.

A wake-up call I needed, maybe, to slow down.

That’s me, over and out.

PS I wrote this post (over on LinkedIn) as I was heading up to Birmingham to speak with The Talking Tradesman , Lee Evans and James Roffey at the InstallerSHOW P&D Show … travelling by train 😂 😜

The first rule of Fight Klub....

(Yep, you read that right, that’s Fight Klub with a ‘K’ coz, y’know, I’m down with the kids 😜 Drum ‘n’ bass boxing is the ONE, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to walk tomorrow.)

I wanna talk about something Chris Grant GLA said earlier this week after we met: freelancing can be a lonely business.

Here are some things I do to feel less lonely:

- Always talk about it (that’s the first rule, we all know that)

- Exercise with other people - for me either first thing in the morning or the middle of the day to shake things up. The sillier the better. If I’m laughing I tend to forget how much I’m sweating.

- Regular anchor points: I have a weekly accountability hour with my business bestie Sally Kent | Learning & Development Specialist, regular brunch dates with Nick Brown who keeps me sane, and peer support from the Harbour crew: Ben, Jenny, Rowan, Anita, Debs and Olivia-Louise Hamilton

- Find your tribe. You *know* who your people are. They stand out like a flamingo in a flock of pigeons, because their voice sounds like someone you’d want to go to the pub with. Say hi! Tell them what you appreciate about them. Magical things can happen.

- Go to like kickass connection events (ideally out in nature) like SOFest Kirsty | The Facilitator & Trainer Coach (next year 💯!), The Happy Startup School hangouts, Your Away Day with Joel Lawton...

Who/what have I forgotten?

For over a year I’ve been SO PROUD to partner with Terracotta Productions, who are now raising money for their production of Sitting (In Silence)

This powerful two-person play is multi-award-winning with a bunch of five star reviews ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The play was written by Kitty Falcon following the loss of her father to su***de when she was 18, and explores a complex father-daughter relationship set during a ten-day silent mediation retreat.

It confronts taboos, encourages open conversation, and is on a mission to save lives.

After winning both a Community Award and an Emerging Artist Award last year, the show is heading to Summerhall at the for all of August 🙌🏼

… whilst continuing outreach and community work, including partnerships with and me

With grants for the Fringe reduced by over 93% this year, and su***de rates on the rise, your support is more important than ever.

This fundraiser video features personal tributes to loved ones lost, reflecting the play’s themes of grief.

Please donate if you can:

No donation is too small, and if you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this video would mean the world 🙏🏼
