Melanoma skin cancer is the 5th most common cancer in the UK and accounts for 5% of all new cancer cases (Cancer Research UK).
The main risk factors causing melanoma skin cancer are:
- age (1/3 of causes are diagnosed in people over 75)
- UV light exposure from the sun, sunbeds; getting sunburn and not wearing sun cream🌞
- number of freckles, moles or birthmarks;
- genetic factors and family history.
86% of skin cancer cases are preventable, but since the 1990s, cases have increased by 164%. It has a survival rate of over 92%, by why take that risk? With summer coming up, make sure you stay in the shade when possible and pop on some good-quality sun cream🏖
If you have a mole or lesion that you think is suspicious or changing, get it checked! Medical professionals with dermoscopy training should be able to identify something that may need further investigation - whether its your GP (for the whole body) or registered podiatrist (for the lower limb).
Both Donyah and Wendy are trained to use a dermatoscope, so if you have any lower-limb moles you're worried about, they can check it at your appointment.
