Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic

Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic The Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic was established in 2010 and is run by Sue Jennings, BSc (Hons), Ost

I was born and have lived in Chatham all of my life, so when choosing where to open my osteopathic clinic, I always knew it would be in my local area of Lordswood so that I could offer help to the local community with their muscle, joint or back pain. Since opening the practice in 2010, it has grown significantly so that it now offers two treatment rooms and a really relaxed and calm waiting room

for patients. Our services have grown too so that now we not only offer osteopathy and cranial osteopathy, we also offer sports massage and medical acupuncture. As well as working at the practice, I assist with the examination process for the undergraduate osteopathic students at the European School of Osteopathy, Boxley, Maidstone. I examine the students on clinical neurology which is the assessment of the nervous system and is I feel, one of the most important parts of osteopathy. This special interest of mine has allowed me to help patients with neurological based problems such as disc injuries (prolapses), neurological migraines and strokes. I consider osteopathy to be very effective due to the wide range of different techniques available to the osteopath which allows each treatment to be suited to the individual patient. This means that treatment can be very successful but also means that the patient is very relaxed and confident within their treatment and rehabilitation stretches and exercises.

Do you always carry your child on the same side?

Most parents and grandparents have a side they naturally use.

It may feel easier, leave one hand free, or simply be the way you’ve always carried them. But regularly holding a child on the same hip can place more load through one side of your back, pelvis, shoulder and neck.

You may begin to notice one side tiring more quickly or discomfort appearing when you stand, walk or lift.

Swapping sides where possible can help. Bring your child close to you before lifting, rather than reaching forwards, and try not to balance them on one hip while carrying bags in the other hand.

Encouraging them to walk for short stretches, where appropriate, can give your body a welcome break too.

You don’t need to carry them perfectly every time. The aim is simply to share the work a little more evenly.

If lifting or carrying your child is becoming painful, we can assess what may be contributing and help you find ways to make those everyday moments easier.

Flip-flops, sliders and thin sandals can feel ideal on a warm day.

But after walking further than planned, you may begin to notice aching through the heel or arch of your foot.

Loose footwear can affect the way you move. You may grip with your toes to keep the shoe in place, shorten your stride, or place more effort through your feet, ankles and calves.

If foot pain changes the way you walk, you may also begin to notice that your ankle, knee or hip feels different.

This can be particularly noticeable if you already have low arches, reduced ankle movement or irritation around the plantar fascia, the strong band of tissue that runs beneath the foot and helps support the arch.

Before a longer walk, check whether your summer shoes:

✔️ Stay securely on your feet without gripping with your toes

✔️ Have a cushioned sole rather than a very thin, flat base

✔️ Offer some support around the heel and arch

✔️ Bend at the front of the foot rather than folding through the middle

✔️ Feel comfortable from the start, without rubbing or slipping

Flip-flops and loose sliders may be fine for short distances, but a more secure sandal or trainer may be a better choice if you’ll be walking for several hours.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we can assess how your feet, ankles, knees and hips are working together. Treatment may include hands-on techniques alongside exercises designed around your movement and symptoms.

The aim isn’t to tell you never to wear summer shoes. It’s to help you choose footwear that suits the distance and activity you have planned.

You stretch your neck, calf, hamstring or lower back and, for a little while, it feels better.

Then the tightness returns.

It can be tempting to stretch harder or more often, but an area that repeatedly feels tight may not simply need to become more flexible.

That sensation can be influenced by how much the area is being used, a recent change in activity, reduced strength or sensitivity in the tissues.

Stretching isn’t necessarily the wrong thing to do. The more useful question is whether it is helping beyond those first few minutes.

If the area feels increasingly irritated, the stretch causes pain or you need to repeat it several times a day just to feel comfortable, it may be time to look at the wider picture.

Instead of stretching harder, keep a simple note for a few days.

❓ When does the tightness return?
❓ What were you doing beforehand?
❓ Does walking, changing position or taking a break help more than another stretch?

Those patterns may provide a better clue than the location of the tightness alone.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we can assess how you are moving, discuss the activities that may be affecting the area and suggest an approach that is better suited to your symptoms.

You don’t always realise how much you rely on your hands and wrists until simple things start to feel uncomfortable.

Opening a jar, gripping the steering wheel, lifting the kettle, using a mouse or carrying shopping can suddenly take more effort than they should.

The discomfort might feel sharp, achy, stiff or weak.

It’s easy to adapt without really noticing. You might use the other hand, change your grip or avoid certain jobs altogether.

Small changes may help reduce the repeated load.

✔️ Keep your mouse and frequently used objects within easy reach
✔️ Avoid gripping tools tighter than necessary
✔️ Use both hands for heavier items such as a full kettle or saucepan.
✔️ Switching tasks regularly can also ensure you stay comfortable, rather than repeating the same movement for a long period.

Typing, gardening, DIY, crafting and lifting can all place regular demand through the hands and wrists. But the area where you feel pain isn’t always the only part worth considering.

Depending on your symptoms, an assessment may also include your elbow, shoulder, and neck to understand how the whole arm is functioning.

If pain keeps returning, your grip feels weaker or everyday tasks are becoming harder, it may be worth getting some support rather than continuing to work around it.

Does your baby always prefer looking the same way?

Some babies naturally seem to have a favourite side.

But you may begin to notice that your baby almost always turns their head in one direction, appears less comfortable looking the other way or prefers feeding from one side.

It can show up in small moments throughout the day. Perhaps they settle more easily in a certain position, turn towards the same side in their cot or become unsettled when you gently encourage them to look the other way.

A preference doesn’t automatically mean that something is wrong.

However, if it feels particularly strong, your baby seems unable to turn their head comfortably or you notice a change in their head shape, it’s sensible to speak to your health visitor or GP.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we also offer gentle osteopathic assessments for babies. We’ll take time to listen to what you’ve noticed, observe how your baby moves and explain whether osteopathic treatment may be suitable.

Sometimes, having the opportunity to talk through what you are seeing can help you feel more confident about what to do next.

When a headache keeps returning, it’s easy to blame stress, tiredness or too much screen time and carry on with your day.

Those things can play a part. But headaches have many possible causes, so it’s important not to assume that every one is simply “tension”.

It can help to notice the pattern.

❓ Does the pain appear after long periods at your desk?
❓ Does it come with a stiff neck?
❓ Is it there when you wake up, or does it build as the day goes on?
❓ Has it changed in frequency or intensity?

Those details can help determine whether your headache may have a musculoskeletal element or whether you should speak to your GP.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we’ll listen carefully, assess you and be honest about whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate. Where something needs medical investigation, we’ll advise you to seek the right support.

A day at a wedding, festival, exhibition or sightseeing attraction can leave your body feeling surprisingly weary, even when you haven’t walked very far.

Standing still asks your muscles to hold you in one position for long periods. Your lower back, hips, knees and feet are all working, but without the regular change of movement that comes with walking.

As the day goes on, you may find yourself leaning onto one leg, locking your knees or shifting your weight from side to side.

By the time you finally sit down, your feet are aching and your back is ready for a rest.

Moving around whenever you get the chance can help, and choosing footwear that feels comfortable and suits the day ahead.

When you get home, a short walk or some gentle movement may also feel better than collapsing into one position for the rest of the evening.

If standing for long periods regularly leaves you uncomfortable, an osteopathic assessment can help explore how your body is managing the load.

The early months with a baby can pass in a blur.

Between feeding, broken sleep and adjusting to a completely new routine, your own recovery can easily move to the bottom of the list.

Then months or even years later, you may still notice things that don’t feel quite right.

Perhaps your tummy feels weaker, exercise feels different, you experience pelvic heaviness or leaking, or certain movements have become uncomfortable.

It’s common to wonder whether you have left it too late to ask for help.

You haven’t.

A Mummy MOT is a detailed postnatal assessment that gives you space to talk about how your body has recovered from pregnancy and birth. It can include an assessment of your posture, abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and the way you move.

The advice is then tailored to what you want to return to. That might be running, lifting weights, playing with your children or simply feeling more confident in daily life.

You don’t need to have had your baby recently, and you don’t need to wait until something becomes a major problem to get the help you deserve.

You may know that something doesn’t feel right, but still feel unsure about booking your first osteopathy appointment.

Will treatment hurt? What if you can’t explain exactly where the problem is coming from? Is it serious enough to ask for help, or should you wait and see whether it settles?

These are all common questions, and it’s completely normal to feel apprehensive when you don’t know what to expect.

Your first appointment isn't about arriving with all the answers. It begins with a conversation about what you you’ve been experiencing, when the problem started, how it's affecting your daily life and what you would like to get back to doing more comfortably.

Here are a few simple things you can do to feel more prepared:

✔️ Wear comfortable clothing to the appointment that allows you to move easily

✔️ Bring details of any medication, scans or relevant medical letters

✔️ Think about when the problem started and what makes it feel better or worse

✔️ Make a note of anything you'd like to ask during the appointment

Our latest blog takes you through each stage of a first osteopathy appointment, from the initial conversation and assessment, to treatment, advice and what happens next.
