Starting school is a big milestone and there are lots of simple ways you can help your child feel more confident and ready.

Try practising everyday skills through play:

👂 Listening and following simple instructions
💬 Asking for help when they need it
🔄 Taking turns and sharing
😊 Talking about feelings

The key is to keep it fun, relaxed and part of everyday routines. There’s no need for formal practice!

Starting school is a big milestone.

Here at bMindful, we know that Speech and Language skills are key to ensure your child gets used to new activities and routines when they start school.

When your child is at home with you, you can practice communication skills with fun activities.

Practising sharing and taking turns with toys. Roll a ball, play a simple board game, or build a tower together.

Make a Worry Monster

Let them eat your worries.

We used:
Paper
Pens
Child-friendly safety-scissors
Play-Doh
Crafting materials like – googly-eyes pipe cleaners, pom poms

But you could use an old cereal box or any crafting materials.

Write down worries on paper cut into strips.
Make your monster…how they look is up to you!

Show them your worries – then create a mouth area and feed your worries to monster – to help let any big feelings go.

If you make a monster we’d love to see it.

Starting school isn't just about learning letters and numbers.
Over the summer, help your child build confidence by practising:

👟 Putting shoes on and off
🎒 Carrying their backpack
🧥 Hanging up their coat
🍱 Opening their lunchbox
💬 Asking for help and turn taking

Many parents worry about:
- Writing names
- Counting
- Phonics

But the strongest predictors of settling well are often:
- Emotional regulation
- Ability to separate
- Turn-taking
- Communication
- Flexibility
- Coping with frustration

Keep it playful and pressure-free. Small steps now can make the transition feel more manageable in September.
