FOCUS

There is a big link between focus and our other summer themes but once again I think it deserves its own place on the grid.

Focus is becoming increasingly difficult to have in the world we now live in. Our phones provide a million distractions which sometimes are a godsend, but other times really hold us back. We all need to have our feet squarely in the present some of the time and not be dragged somewhere else either physically or mentally. We are so often only ‘half present’ to those around us and when you are trying to talk to someone who isn’t entirely listening it doesn’t feel great.

Something I was super excited about was going off grid intentionally this summer a couple of times. A few years ago, I would never bring my phone on holiday with me at all but just rely on my husband’s if someone needed to contact us but somehow, I phased that out. We went to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales during these 6 weeks and then onto Kefalonia (all so beautiful). We did some remote walks which enforced being present and focused (much to my teenager’s disgust!)

When you give birth, you absolutely need to be focused and present. Your body will be telling you what to do and without focus you won’t be able to listen and respond. This is no different to all parts of our lives really but is magnified when you labour.

I’m determined to try to focus on the here and now more often. It might feel uncomfortable sometimes but I’m excited by what I will gain.

We’d love to hear your perspective on this

INTUITION

This is another biggy. And it can be so hard to be intuitive.

The world can be so noisy both in real life and online. Many of us have got used to overriding our intuition and instincts because often they are pretty inconvenient or we are so distracted we struggle to notice. This creates an internal conflict because when we don’t tune in we tend to build up stress.

Intuition is again a hugely important part of pregnancy / birth / parenting. Asking yourself how do I feel about this? What are my instincts telling me? Taking a minute to gather and consider can make the most enormous difference. We can be so swayed by the opinions of others in the noisy world that we stop realising what we need or want.

Being led by your intuition takes courage and practise but very much will help with our other summer themes – calm, connection, priorities, intention and focus.

Has your intuition helped with your decision making recently? We would love to know.

PRIORITIES

This is a biggy for me and one I don’t always get right. We have so many pressures on us and responsibilities and it is incredibly hard to balance them correctly all the time.

I also think it is helpful to notice when they are out of balance. You can’t always figure out what to do about it at the time but noticing is a great first step and then you can slowly untangle things and work out what to do.

Priorities can shift hourly / daily too which can feel hard.

In pregnancy because I had decided to use Hypnobirthing and my birth was only ever getting closer, this deadline meant I prioritised my birth prep and without realising this would be the case, it massively helped me in all areas of my life. By slowing down my breath I felt calmer, by switching off and listening to my relaxations I felt more rested, by using my affirmations I felt more capable, by connecting with my husband I felt more like a team.

Sometimes when we work out our priorities we find unexpected benefits.

This summer I am prioritising my children. I am prioritising finding little moments for me.
I am prioritising being a little slower but also spending time readying myself for September. I’m still going to be pretty busy ☺️.

What are your priorities right now? We would love to know!

CONNECTION

If you started at the beginning of the series, you will be noticing that all the themes / words are very much interlinked. Connection is a big intention of mine this summer and is such an important element of Hypnobirthing too - it definitely needs its own post on the grid.

When we are given a bit of respite, we catch a moment to consider our priorities. Luci and I both work term time (I am a part time teacher and she is a childminder) and we balance teaching Hypnobirthing alongside this and so we both get the 6 weeks holidays which is just the best thing ever. These 6 weeks in my opinion are such a gift.

When I am given the chance to catch my breath it is nearly always connection that becomes a priority because this can easily slip when life is hectic. Using the time to meet up with friends, see family and slow down enough to give more time to my husband and children.

When I was pregnant, Hypnobirthing was what provided me with the opportunity to connect with my husband. The techniques need practice and so we had to set aside intentional time to learn the breathing techniques together, listen to relaxations and go over the massage (my favourite). It was a really special time.

The tools I learnt and now teach have absolutely carried on through to family life. I am sooo not perfect at this and often slip up but when things aren’t functioning well in my family, it is nearly always down to a lack of time for connection. So I’m working on that this summer.

What do you think? How does connection look to you? We’d love to hear.

INTENTION

I love to goal set and have always have an ongoing list of things I want to do. This summer it includes clearing out different parts of my house where clutter has been dumped out of sight when time was short and now I’m going to tackle (not fun but super satisfying!) I also need to teach myself the GCSE syllabus ready for my year 10 class in September (for those of you who don’t know I also teach secondary part time).

But my intentions aren’t all about achieving physical things, they are also about feelings and connections. If I don’t consider these too I might end up with a cleaner and clearer house and a brain full of knowledge to inspire my year 10’s (ha!) but I might have accidentally used far too much time on these and neglected things that are far more important … connecting with my friends and family and doing small things for myself.

One of my biggest intentions for this summer is to spend time meaningfully connecting with my children. The long days offer opportunities that winter does not and I fully intend to make the most of them. I’m not unrealistic, it won’t all be roses but setting the intention makes this a big priority for me and when September rolls around I want to feel like I allowed and made room for small moments rather than being distracted.

Linking this back to Hypnobirthing … thinking intentionally about what you want from your pregnancy and birth will make a huge difference. It will shift your priorities. It will help you give the time required to your birth prep because you have elevated its importance.

Do you have any intentions for the summer? We would absolutely love to hear them. Do share.

CALM.

Just to preface this, I am not a ‘naturally’ calm person. I have what I call a ‘ping pong’ brain where thoughts and ideas bounce around constantly and I get excited easily. I find it almost impossible to do one thing at a time so can be this constantly moving ball of energy. HOWEVER, I LOVE calm and intentionally seek it out. I also try hard to be a calming influence both at home and a work (I’m not always successful!)

But I fully recognise that moments of calm are essential. We need to give our nervous system a break. Although it can feel great to ‘get s**t done’, some balance is definitely required or we end up feeling wired and adrenaline fuelled for much of the time. Seeking out calm is especially important if you are pregnant as you will need to pull on this time and time again when you give birth and then for forever afterwards as parents.

So how do we seek out calm? For me it is intentionally just doing one thing. My phone gets put in another room. I’m not allowed to multi task. It might be giving my full attention to my children, reading a book (for me this is real me time), listening to a relaxation track, going for a walk, baking. But just doing ONE thing. No listening to a podcast at the same time or answering an email half-way though. Just one thing.

I have popped a relaxation track in our links called ‘Calm down, slow down’. I would love you to listen to this regularly during your summer and give yourself the gift of just doing one thing at a time and seeking out calm.

What is calm to you? We would absolutely love to hear. Please do share in the comments.
