I’m not Superwoman — and neither are you.
When you’re starting a complementary therapy business, it’s very easy to be afraid of investing in technology or in people who can do something better than you can.
So we try to do everything ourselves — and preferably as cheaply as possible.
I certainly did and have learnt my lesson!
Everything in business costs you something: time, money or skill. The trick is working out which one it makes sense to spend.
My first course prospectus is a perfect example.
The idea was sound. The content was good.
The execution… well, that left rather a lot to be desired. 😂
I decided I could produce it myself using Microsoft Publisher.
And I did.
Eventually.
It took me hours; I learnt several new skills along the way and quite a few painful lessons about what happens when you try to do something that really isn’t your area of expertise.
When I wanted to grow, I made a different decision.
I paid a graphic designer.
Yes, it cost money. That meant I needed to run a few more sessions to pay for it — but training was something I already knew how to do.
And the difference was enormous.
Learners actually commented on how professional our printed materials looked.
That taught me something I’ve carried with me ever since:
You don’t have to do everything yourself to run a successful business.
Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is recognise where your time and skills are best spent — and get help with the rest.
Surround yourself with people who know things you don’t and have skills you don’t have.
I’m not Superwoman — and neither are you.
And frankly, that’s quite a relief. 😄
