Concerned about Scoliosis? Scoliosis is a condition of the spine which causes it to form an “S” or “C” shape when viewed behind. Many people have mild Scoliosis (less than 20 degrees) and experience no issues as a result. As Scoliotic curves get bigger, however, there can be negative impacts...

Did you know that as many as 1 in 3 over 60's develop a form of Scoliosis known as "de-novo" or degenerative Scoliosis? It's age-related, so not "curable", but with modern techniques like bracing and scoliosis-specific exercise, it's possible to keep people fit, comfortable and active 💪

Two scoliosis curves? The direction of your exercise really matters. ↔️

This gentleman is over 60 with a right lumbar and left thoracic degenerative scoliosis, as well as two hip replacements.

Here I’m demonstrating a gentle Schroth-style correction to help elongate the spine, open the rib cage and strengthen the corrected position. 🫁💪

⚠️ His curve pattern is less typical. If you have the more common left lumbar/right thoracic pattern, this correction would usually be performed in the opposite direction.

Scoliosis exercises should always match the individual curve.

🦴 Brace Aftercare Service

One of the biggest misconceptions about scoliosis bracing is that once the brace has been fitted, that’s the end of the process.

In reality, the brace needs regular monitoring 👀 and, quite often, adjustments. 🔧

As children and teenagers grow 🌱, or if their weight or body shape changes, the way the brace fits also changes. Even small changes can reduce how effectively the brace is correcting the curve or make it less comfortable to wear.

That’s why our brace aftercare service is such an important part of treatment. 💙

During a review appointment we assess:
✅ How the brace is fitting
🎯 Whether the corrective forces are still in the right place
😊 Areas of pressure or discomfort
📈 Growth and postural changes
🔧 Whether adjustments or modifications are needed

Our goal is to keep the brace fitting comfortably while ensuring it continues to provide the best possible correction throughout treatment. 🙌

If you feel your child’s brace has become tight, loose, uncomfortable, or they’ve recently had a growth spurt 📏, book a brace review. Early adjustments can make a significant difference to both comfort and treatment outcomes.

With scoliosis in children, it's best not to "watch and wait" - this attitude stems from the fact that, historically, surgery was the only option for Scoliosis treatment, but today that is NOT the case! Conservative approaches like bracing are now ideal for treating these kinds of cases.

🟢 One of My Patient’s Favourite Exercises for Adult Degenerative Scoliosis

This is one of my patient’s favourite exercises, and she says it’s the first thing she does whenever her lower back starts to feel stiff, compressed or painful.

She slowly walks her hands up the wall, gently elongates through her spine, holds the position for around 10 breaths, and then slowly controls herself back down.

She tells me it helps her:
✔️ Feel taller and less compressed
✔️ Stretch through her spine
✔️ Improve her posture
✔️ Relieve her lower back pain

One important tip: don’t simply collapse back down after you’ve elongated. Try to stay as tall as possible and slowly control your body back to the starting position.

This is a real patient with adult degenerative scoliosis sharing what works well for her. Remember, every scoliosis is different, so exercises should always be tailored to your individual spine and symptoms.

👇 I’d love to know…
What’s your go-to exercise when your scoliosis starts to flare up?

💚 Save this reel so you can come back to it later, and share it with someone living with adult scoliosis.
