It's Carers Week ⭐

This week, we want to recognise the quiet strength of unpaid carers.

The early mornings, the interrupted nights, the constant thinking ahead… the patience it takes, the love it takes- even on the days when it feels hardest.

You don’t do it for recognition, but what you do matters more than you may ever hear. You make someone feel safe, supported and valued every single day.

It’s not always easy and it’s not always seen- but it is deeply important.

If you’re an unpaid carer: we see you, we appreciate you and you’re not alone. ❤

❤Forget me not Fridays ❤

Behind every person living with a dementia, there is often someone supporting them.
Carers, family and friends give so much-but they need support too.

💙 It’s okay to feel tired
💙 It’s okay to ask for help
💙 You matter just as much

As the old saying goes, You can’t pour from an empty cup.

This week, as part of our intergenerational work, we visited Bredon Hancocks C of E First School to speak to the year 5 class about dementia.

We had some lovely conversations about how dementia can make someone feel and what we could do to support someone living with a dementia. The children were compassionate, polite and fully immersed themselves in the learning and activities ❤️

Intergenerational work is so important in lots of different ways. If you would like us to come to your school. Please let us know!

⭐ Wednesday Wisdom ⭐

Caring for someone living with a dementia can feel overwhelming at times. Small changes can make a big difference.

Top tip: Slow down and simplify communication.

People with a dementia may struggle to process information quickly.

Try to:
👉Speak calmly and at a gentle pace
👉Use short, simple sentences
👉Ask one question at a time
👉Allow extra time for them to respond

Remember, it’s not about correcting or rushing - it’s about connecting. 💞

By meeting the person where they are, you can reduce frustration and create more meaningful moments together.

❤ Forget me not Fridays ❤

Small moments matter.

A smile. A hand held. A shared laugh.

For someone living with a dementia, these moments can bring comfort, connection and reassurance-even when other things feel uncertain.

Never underestimate the big impact of a small moment.
💙 Small moments can create big feelings
💙 Connection doesn’t need words
💙 Kindness is always remembered in some way

⭐Why language matters in dementia⭐

The words we use matter more than we might think.

When we talk about dementia, we’re not talking about one single condition—we’re talking about a range of different dementias. That’s why there is a growing shift towards saying “a dementia” rather than just “dementia.”

It may seem small, but it’s powerful.

Using “a dementia” helps:
🧠 Recognise that there are many different types
💙 Avoid defining someone by one label
🗣️ Respect people as individuals first, not diagnoses

Language doesn’t just describe—it shapes how people are seen, treated and how they feel about themselves.

Whether you are living with a dementia or supporting someone who is, remember:
✨ You are still you
✨ You still have a voice
✨ You still matter

Let’s choose words that respect, empower and reflect the person—not just the condition.

Lots of important advice from Alzheimer's Society during this hot weather 🥵🥵

The Bank Holiday heatwave is here 🔥

Hot weather can cause discomfort and a risk of dehydration for people living with dementia, and an amber heat alert is in place across parts of the country this weekend.

If you’re supporting someone with dementia, here are a few things that can help:

Make sure the person is dressed appropriately. Try light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibres.

Keep the house as cool as possible. Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day - especially in south-facing rooms. In the evening, open the windows to let the warm air out and the colder air in.

Avoid the midday sun. Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (between 11am and 3pm). Seek out plenty of shade and reapply sunscreen regularly when out.

Find ways to cool off. Help them take a cool bath or shower. Place a washcloth and some iced water nearby to dab themselves with.

Stay hydrated. Leave beakers or jugs of water within easy reach. Provide high-water-content foods like ice lollies, jelly, ice cream, soup, and fruit such as melon.

Ask friends and neighbours to pop in and check the person is ok if you don’t live near them. Perhaps the visitor could stay, have a drink with the person, and make sure the person has everything they need.

📢 Please share so we can keep everyone living with dementia safe in the heat.
