This is what the start of a water treadmill journey can really look like 👀

We’re used to seeing strong, experienced horses make it look easy. But for horses that are new, deconditioned or returning from injury, the work is obvious. Wobbly steps and reduced stability show just how much effort the horse is putting in! 💪🏼

Understanding what’s normal, when to support and how to progress safely is key. That’s exactly what we teach on our Level 4 and Level 6 courses, especially through our applied pathways with placements.

Equine Hydrotherapy in its modern form, has been used in equine performance and rehabilitation for over 50 years in the UK. Whilst the technology has evolved, and the research to support it is growing, unfortunately there is no regulation and (until now!), no appropriate qualifications; putting the welfare of horses at huge risk.

Well we’re going to change that. Working closely with the Institute of Equine Hydrotherapists (IEH), the Institute of Registered Veterinary and Animal Physiotherapists (IRVAP) and the Register for Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP), VetHed has developed a suite of equine hydrotherapy courses to educate Equine Hydrotherapists, raising equine welfare standards.

Big horse, big splash, big personality! 🤭

This lovely gelding hasn’t been on the water treadmill for a while, so yes… there was a bit of excitement involved. 🤪 While letting horses explore and feel comfortable is important, our real focus is always the task in hand, walking calmly and straight through the water.

Why does that matter? Because posture, straightness and focus directly affect how the horse moves, loads each limb and responds to the session. Fun is fine, but effective hydrotherapy relies on correct handling, observation and progression.

This is exactly the kind of real world scenario we cover on our Applied Level 4 and Level 6 courses. With hands on placements, you’ll learn how to manage behaviour, read movement, and guide horses safely and effectively through each session, not just in theory, but in practice.

Did you know? 💭

Both our Level 4 and Level 6 courses include vital training in equine first aid and health monitoring, giving candidates the knowledge to support horses safely through hydrotherapy. 🚨

You’ll learn how to monitor a horse’s health pre, during and post-treatment to help reduce injury or complications like colic. The unit also covers basic first aid skills such as wound care, bandaging, and the role of preventative management.

Candidates will assess vital signs like pulse and respiratory rate, learn how to reduce stress and anxiety, and understand inpatient and outpatient care needs.

It’s easy enough these days to buy an equine water treadmill, be shown how to use it and off you pop. But it’s a huge piece of equipment, and if used incorrectly, can have detrimental effects on the horse - which is why our director, Grace Nattrass, started VetHed. 🤓

As a practising therapist, Grace saw first hand the lack of structured, high quality training available to those wanting to work professionally with horses. She founded VetHed to bridge that gap, creating courses that not only educate, but equip therapists with the practical skills and clinical thinking needed to make a real difference to equine welfare, because better understanding leads to better care.

If you’re wanting to develop your skills as an equine hydrotherapist, or wondering how you can enter the industry full steam ahead, head to our website now www.vethed.co.uk for more information and to enrol.

As this horse walks through the water treadmill we’re watching pelvic swing, spotting asymmetries, checking whether they are tracking up, and listening closely to rhythm and consistency through each stride.

This is exactly the kind of detail our students learn to assess on our Level 4 and Level 6 Applied courses, where placements give real, hands on experience with horses in a working clinical environment. 💪🏼

You do not just learn the theory. You learn how to see it, hear it, and feel it in practice. 🤓 If you want practical skills, confident observation, and real world experience, our applied courses are where it starts.

Available at Level 4 and Level 6, these courses are ideal for international students or anyone who wants to develop their expertise but doesn’t have the time for hands on placements. 🌍

Shetlands are naturally prone to obesity and laminitis, so managing weight and workload carefully is essential. Controlled exercise on the water treadmill allows movement to be monitored and adjusted without excessive concussive load, making it a useful option when managing condition and reducing risk. 🐷

It is also an effective way to maintain fitness for Shetlands that are racing, helping support conditioning while keeping impact low. 💪🏼

As always, understanding the individual pony and applying the right knowledge is key to making safe, informed decisions. That’s where despite the fun and cuteness, our courses are super important no matter the size or discipline of your client.
