Every member of our clinical teams starts with a successful recruitment journey.

👏 Congratulations to Mr Montey Garg, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Surgeon, receiving the prestigious BAOMS Surgery Prize.

The national award recognises Montey’s outstanding contribution to oral and maxillofacial surgery, including developing a digital training programme that transformed surgical education across the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alongside his national work, Montey leads the oral and maxillofacial surgery head and neck cancer service at Great Western Hospital and contributes to our multidisciplinary skin cancer service, helping to deliver specialist care for patients across the region.

We’re proud to have Montey as part of our Great Western team. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement! 🎉

A huge thank you to Asda at Orbital Park for their generous donation of colouring pens, pencils, cards, sudokus, wordsearch books, colouring books and other activity items for our patients on Saturn ward.

These resources provide valuable opportunities for meaningful activities, helping patients stay mentally and physically engaged during their hospital stay.

The donated items support our efforts to prevent deconditioning and play an important role in our “Get Up, Get Dressed, Keep Moving" campaign, which encourages patients to remain active and maintain their independence wherever possible.👏🏼💙

A huge congratulations to Dr Kinan Muhammed, Consultant Neurologist, who has won a national Patient Engagement Award, in the category ‘Analogue to Digital’ at the Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Awards. 👏🏼

Dr Muhammed has created an innovative app which turns patients' own smartphones into tools for proactive, personalised Parkinson's care, moving the pathway away from occasional in-person snapshots and towards continuous monitoring.

Now rolled out across many hospitals in the country and more widely overseas in the United States, the app measures key aspects of function, including voice, balance, walking, finger dexterity, reaction time, rest and postural tremor as well as cognitive performance.

Clinical evaluations in both countries have demonstrated improvements in patient knowledge, confidence, and empowerment, while also delivering benefits for healthcare systems through improved clinical outcomes, greater efficiency, and reductions in hospital admissions.

Initially it was developed for people living with Parkinson’s disease, but the technology is now being expanded to support thousands of patients with dementia and other neurological conditions, including their caregivers.💙

To celebrate their cultural diversity, the fantastic team on the Acute Cardiac Unit recently held a food festival.🥗🍱🍚🍜

Staff brought traditional dishes from different countries all around the world, so they could take a well-earned break over lunchtime and learn more about each other’s cultures while enjoying some delicious food.

The team said that their food festival helped strengthen their team spirit and brought them even closer together as a work family, helping every colleague to feel supported and able to provide the very best care to every patient.💙

Schools out for summer!🌞

With six weeks of sunshine stretched out ahead of us, we want to remind local people, incluing our youngsters, how they can stay safe and out of hospital during the holidays.

Dr Claire Broomfield, Consultant Paediatrician, said: “Summer should be a time for fun, but it's also important that children and young people stay safe whilst enjoying the holidays.

"Whether it's protecting their skin from the sun, staying safe near water, wearing appropriate safety equipment when cycling or scooting, or looking after their mental wellbeing, small actions can help prevent accidents and illness and ensure everyone has a healthy summer."

Join our next public health talk, titled “So you just give insulin? That doesn’t sound too hard…”

Taking place on Tuesday 28 July from 5pm, this insightful session will explore the psychological impact of Type 1 diabetes and highlight the vital role of a Clinical Psychologist within an NHS diabetes team.

You will gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by people living with diabetes and the support available to help improve wellbeing and health outcomes.
