Take a moment, what you feel is very important and if you need help in working things out I'm accepting new clients. Take advantage of a FREE consultation to begin your journey.

In counselling, normalising means helping a client understand that their thoughts, feelings, or behaviours are common and valid, especially in response to certain situations. It’s a way to reduce shame, anxiety, or the sense of being “abnormal” or “broken.”
For example,
If someone is grieving a loss and says, “I still cry every day, I feel like I should be over this by now,” the counsellor might normalise by saying:
“Many people feel that way after a significant loss. Grieving can take time, and it’s okay to still feel emotional.”
Why it's used:
• Reduces isolation — the client realises they’re not alone.
• Decreases shame — they feel less “weird” or “wrong.”
• Builds trust — they feel understood and accepted.
• Promotes self-compassion — they become kinder to themselves.
Normalising doesn’t mean minimising or dismissing what the person is going through. It’s not saying, “Oh, that’s no big deal.” It’s saying, “What you’re feeling makes sense.”
