There is often a big difference between what people think Tourette syndrome is, and what it is actually like to live with every day.

When most people think of Tourette’s, they usually picture swearing or a few noticeable physical tics. While vocal and motor tics are a part of the condition, they are really just the tip of the iceberg.

The reality is that Tourette’s is much more complex. For many in our community, the daily experience involves a whole range of hidden challenges that people don't see. This includes things like extreme fatigue, pain and injury from repetitive movements, and the exhausting effort of trying to suppress tics.

On top of that, many people navigate executive dysfunction, difficulty sleeping, sensory needs, and co-occurring conditions like ADHD or OCD.

By looking beyond the stereotypes, we can start to build a world that genuinely understands and supports the TS community.

If you want to explore how Tourette's affects daily life and find resources to help, please visit our website to learn more.

Our team at Axia is multi-disciplined, with a wealth of experience - many of which are neurodiverse themselves.

We do all we can to ensure you feel comfortable and at ease when attending your assessment at Axia. We adopt the Partnership Model, which recognises the individual as the expert on themselves, and parents as experts on their children, and share the mutual expertise in the room in order to gain an understanding of you/your child.

If you would like further details on our assessment process, please contact our admin office to request an Information Pack. You can read more about the full Axia team on the 'Meet the Team' page of our website.

What is Synaesthesia?

Approximately 4% of people experience Synaesthesia.

People with Synaesthesia experience a crossover of senses, for example they can often see music as colours when they hear it, and taste colours. (Such as the colour red would taste of strawberries)

Rising autism diagnosis rates have been the subject of debate across policy and public affairs. The Government in England has commissioned an Independent Review to explore the factors behind rising diagnosis, across autism, ADHD, and mental health conditions. At a time of intense pressure on public resources, and with stigmatising narratives circulating about ‘overdiagnosis’, there is a risk that once again, policy fails autistic children, young people, and adults, and their families.

At these times, it is vital to have clear sight of the big picture.

For decades, autistic people have faced systemic barriers across society and services. These barriers have not gone away, and autistic children, young people and adults continue to experience some of the greatest harms of any group.

In the policy world there is interest in ‘strengths and needs assessment’ as a way of improving outcomes and avoiding diagnosis being used to restrict access to services, as is currently the case. But without addressing systemic barriers, any move towards ‘needs-led’ services is likely to fail.
