What is Benedict’s law?

Benedict’s Law is a set of new allergy safety requirements introduced following the death of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who tragically suffered a fatal allergic reaction at school.

If you work at a school, here are some useful points to help you stay in the loop.

1. Schools will be required to have clear procedures in place for managing allergies and dealing with allergic emergencies.

2. Teachers and other staff should receive training to help them identify and respond appropriately to severe allergic reactions.

3. Emergency adrenaline auto-injectors (EpiPens or similar) will need to be available where necessary to support a rapid response.

4. Pupils with diagnosed allergies will need to have individual care plans outlining their specific needs and emergency treatment arrangements.

5. Schools will be expected to maintain accurate records and ensure effective communication regarding allergy-related incidents and risks.

These requirements will become mandatory for all schools in England from September 2026.

You can read more about Benedict’s law directly from the Benedict Blythe website.

The recent incident involving Tom Lockyer is indeed a sobering reminder of the unpredictability and severity of cardiac emergencies. Lockyer's sudden cardiac arrest, triggered by atrial fibrillation, underscores the critical nature of such conditions, irrespective of age or physical fitness. At just 29 years old, his experience serves as a stark illustration that cardiac events can indeed afflict anyone.

This event also highlights the vital importance of prompt and efficient emergency response. The immediate intervention by pitch-side medical staff and the subsequent urgent medical care he received, including surgery, demonstrates the life-saving impact of rapid medical attention in such critical situations.

This incident emphasizes the significance of widespread first aid and basic life support training. The ability to respond effectively in the initial moments of a cardiac emergency can dramatically influence the outcome.

As Tom Lockyer undergoes recovery, our thoughts are with him and his family during this challenging time. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of health and the importance of being prepared for medical emergencies.

The Luton captain collapsed mid-way through the second half of their Premier League tie with Bournemouth after suffering a cardiac arrest.
