5 things that support communication more than flashcards 👀💬

Flashcards can have a place, but they’re not the most powerful tool for building communication skills.

What makes the biggest difference?

✨ Connection first
✨ Following your child’s interests
✨ Repetition
✨ Pausing and waiting
✨ Play

Children learn language through meaningful interactions with the people around them. When communication feels natural, enjoyable, and connected to what they’re interested in, they’re more likely to engage and learn.

Flashcards aren’t “bad” 💕
But communication grows best through connection, interaction, and shared experiences.

Save this post for a reminder that supporting communication doesn’t have to be complicated ✨

M&S food finds 👀🍓🍕

This week’s highlights:

✨ Pizza Pocket
✨ Strawberry Diamond Sparkling Wine
✨ Custard Crème Donut

I love spotting the latest food launches and limited editions in M&S- there’s always something new to try!

And a little speech and language tip while you’re there… supermarkets are brilliant for supporting language development. There are so many opportunities to introduce new vocabulary, offer choices, describe foods, talk about colours, textures and tastes, and follow your child’s interests. Food can be incredibly motivating, which makes communication opportunities feel natural and fun.

Now, back to the important question… what’s your favourite M&S treat? 👇🏻

✨ Speech Therapy Essentials ✨

If I could only keep a handful of therapy resources, these would definitely make the cut👇🏻

🫧 Bubbles:
The ultimate motivator. Great for attention, turn-taking, requesting, commenting, and making me look far more exciting than I actually am.

🐊 Crocodile Dentist:
Perfect for turn-taking, anticipation, describing, and teaching children that life is full of unexpected jump scares.

🏴‍☠️ Pop-Up Pirate:
A therapy favourite! Ideal for counting, following directions, making predictions, and creating suspense.

🥔 Mr Potato Head:
Vocabulary, body parts, requesting, following instructions, describing… this little guy does it all.

🐷 Pop the Pig:
Who knew feeding a pig burgers could target so many speech and language goals? Requesting, colour matching, turn-taking, and endless giggles.

🔴🟡 Connect 4:
The sneaky speech therapy game. Strategy, conversation, turn-taking and problem-solving.

What’s your speech therapy essential that you couldn’t live without? 👇🏻

De-influencing Speech Therapy (Real Life Edition)

A very real look at life outside clinic as a 31 year old Speech Therapist

I don’t really relate to the idea that professionals have everything perfectly together all the time.

The reality for me is a bit more everyday.

👗 I get most of my clothes from Vinted (and sometimes Shein).

🧸 My dining table is usually covered in speech therapy resources I haven’t put away yet 🙈

🌿 I go through the same cycle every year where I get excited about my garden and then somehow manage to kill most of the plants.

👜 My black Radley bag is ancient, has been repaired twice, and now has a hole in the zip but I refuse to replace it because I love it.

👚 I absolutely hate putting away clean washing, so there are often piles of it around my house.

🏡 And my home is definitely not Instagram-worthy, there’s usually clutter somewhere, and a filming corner that needs tidying before I can even start.

And I’m sharing this because I think it matters.

It’s easy to assume that the people posting therapy content or giving advice are doing it from a perfectly organised, curated life. But most of us are just doing life in between everything else.

And speech therapy doesn’t happen in perfect spaces anyway. It happens in real homes, real routines, and real moments that don’t look like social media.

So if your life doesn’t look “put together”… mine doesn’t either 💕

Describe your job, but make it sound illegal 🙈😂

I influence the way people communicate for a living.

Every week, I work alongside parents who are doing their very best to support their child’s communication.

Together, we celebrate the small wins that often go unnoticed by everyone else, a new word, a clearer sound, a moment of confidence.

Because communication is about so much more than talking.

It’s about connection, relationships, and helping a child feel understood.

☀️ 5 Makaton Signs for June ☀️

This month’s signs focus on connection, communication, and the first hints of summer ☀️🎉

👨 Father
🍦 Ice Cream
🙋 Help
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Friends
⚽ Play

These are great everyday signs to model at home, in school and out in the community. The more opportunities children have to see and use signs in meaningful situations, the more confident they become communicating.

Which sign is your favourite this month?

💛 Support isn’t about correcting, it’s about connecting.

As speech and language therapists, it’s easy to focus on targets, goals, and progress.

But before any new word is spoken…
Before a sound is practised…
Before a skill is learned…

Connection comes first 💕

Children communicate best when they feel safe, understood, and valued.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do isn’t correct every mistake or prompt every response. It’s getting down on the floor, joining in their play, following their lead, and showing them that what they have to say matters.

Because meaningful communication grows through relationships ❤️

When we focus on connection first, confidence follows.
And when confidence grows, communication often does too. 💬

Communication Corner 💬 | Episode 12

Language learning doesn’t just happen during structured activities, it happens in everyday moments too 🌟

Simple daily routines give children so many opportunities to hear and learn new words. The more language they hear throughout the day, the more opportunities they have to build their understanding and communication skills 💬💕

Try adding extra language during activities you’re already doing:

🍎 At snack time: “You’re eating a crunchy apple” or “The banana is yellow”

🛒 At the shops: “Look at the big trolley!” or “Can you see the red apples?”

🚗 In the car: “The bus is going fast” or “I can see a dog running”

🛁 During bath time: “Splash, splash!” or “The water is warm”

Making language fun doesn’t need to be complicated. Follow your child’s interests, talk about what they can see, hear and do, and most importantly have fun together 😊

Remember, children learn through repetition. Hearing words again and again in meaningful situations helps them understand and use them over time 🌱

Everyday moments can become language-learning moments 🤍

Most people see a child playing.

As a Speech & Language Therapist, I see a window into how they communicate, connect, think, and learn.

In fact, I can learn a surprising amount in just 30 seconds of watching a child play.

Not because I’m looking for problems.

Because play is where children are often their most natural, authentic selves.

I’m noticing things like:

🧸 What captures their interest
🗣️ How they invite others into their world
🔄 How they respond when plans change

These small moments can tell us so much about a child’s communication style, social interaction, attention, flexibility, and emotional regulation.

Of course, no single behaviour tells the whole story. Child development is complex, and every child is unique.

But play gives us valuable clues that structured tasks sometimes miss.

That’s why you’ll often find therapists sitting on the floor, quietly observing before jumping in.

Because children tell us so much through play- if we take the time to watch.

👇🏻What’s something you’ve noticed about your child when they’re completely absorbed in play?

💛 Client Feedback 💛

Receiving feedback like this never gets old.

Working with children and their families is such a privilege, and one of the most important parts of my role is making sure every child feels comfortable, understood, and supported during their assessment.

I always aim to create sessions that are engaging and enjoyable while taking the time to truly understand each child’s individual strengths and needs. That’s why feedback like this means so much:

✨ “My daughter said she thought Ellen was lovely, which says everything”.

Those words genuinely made my day.

Thank you to this wonderful family for trusting me to support their daughter and for taking the time to share such kind feedback. It means the world to my small business 💕
