Communication is a human right, not a privilege 💬

Every child deserves to have their voice heard, their needs understood and a way to express themselves.

That communication might look like talking, signing, using AAC, gestures, facial expressions, pointing, eye gaze or so many other things.

There is no “right” way to communicate ❤️

Our job isn’t to make children communicate in the way that is easiest for us. It’s to make communication accessible to them.

And that’s something every child deserves 🫶

🍂 Autumn Speech Therapy Essentials 🍂

A few of my autumn favourites that will be making an appearance in my therapy sessions this season…

🎃 Pumpkin spiced latte- because obviously 😂

🍁 Pumpkins, leaves & acorns- perfect for sensory play and SO many opportunities for language.

🧹 Room on the Broom + puppets- an absolute favourite of mine! 👏 Such a fab book for working on vocabulary, prepositions, Blank Level 3 questions, sentence building, honestly the list goes on! And the puppets are brilliant for keeping little ones engaged for longer.

👻 Halloween wind-up toys- perfect for joint attention, building anticipation and working on simple language like “stop” and “go”.

🎃 Halloween Orchard Toys games- I LOVE Orchard Toys games and these Halloween ones are always a hit with the kids!

🧸 A cosy fleece- because the mornings are definitely getting a little chillier!

🍂 And, of course, some autumn-themed stickers. You can never have too many stickers, right?!

🎃🍂 We had such a lovely day today, filled with wholesome autumn activities 🧡💛🤎

It got me thinking about how busy day-to-day life can be, and how difficult it can sometimes feel to fit speech and language practice into everything else.

But the lovely thing is, you don’t always need to find extra time for speech practice. So many opportunities are already part of the things you’re doing together.

Take pumpkin picking, for example! 🎃 One simple family activity can offer so many opportunities to model language:

🎃 Speech sounds: modelling /p/ in pumpkin, patch, picking

🍂 Action words: picking, pushing, looking, finding

🤎 Concepts: big/little, in/on/under

🌽 Vocabulary: pumpkin, maze, vines, orange, corn, leaves, green

💬 Putting words together: big pumpkin, orange pumpkin, finding pumpkins

And the best bit? You’re doing it while enjoying an activity together, following your child’s interests and sharing an experience that’s fun and meaningful to them.

Children learn so much from the language they hear around them. You don’t need to turn every activity into a lesson or feel like you should be practising something every minute of the day.

Sometimes, it’s simply about noticing the opportunities that are already there and modelling a little language as you go 🧡

🎃👻 A haunted house- Speech Therapy Edition 👻🎃

Tell me these aren’t the REAL speech therapy nightmares 😂

🔋 An AAC device at 0% at the bottom of a bag.

🗣️ Someone telling a child to “just use your words”.

👻 Someone recommending “wait and see” when a parent has raised concerns.

💀 Someone saying AAC will stop a child from talking.

😩 Someone labelling a child as “naughty” when they’re struggling to communicate.

🧸 An SLT session full of flashcards when a child just wants to play.

⏳ An adult asking question after question without giving the child time to respond.

These might be Halloween horrors, but they’re also reminders of why we need to keep advocating for communication, understanding and neuroaffirming support 💜

Every child deserves to have their communication recognised, respected and supported- whether that’s through speech, signs, gestures, AAC or any other way they communicate 💬

I created this resource around a year ago and have been using it as a resource myself ever since! 💬

When I originally shared it back in October last year, I had SO much interest and lots of people asking if they could have a copy too.

I’ve been meaning to get around to making it accessible for everyone to download and I’ve finally had the time to sit down and do it! 🙌🏻🎉

And because it’s AAC Awareness Month, I thought it was the perfect time for people to download it and share it with others too! 💬❤️

The world becomes a better place when people feel safe to be themselves 💛

Imagine what could happen if less energy was spent trying to fit in and more was spent exploring interests, building connections and embracing individuality.

When people feel accepted, they are more likely to share their ideas, use their voice, take part and contribute in ways that make our communities richer and more diverse.

The goal shouldn’t be to encourage everyone to be the same. It should be to create a world where being different is welcomed.

⭐ GOLD STAR BEHAVIOUR ⭐

As a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist, these are the behaviours that earn a gold star from me every time:

⭐ Accepting all forms of communication
⭐ Celebrating neurodiversity
⭐ Adapting the environment, not the child
⭐ Making communication accessible to all
⭐ Presuming competence
⭐ Choosing connection over compliance

Communication isn’t about fitting children into a mould. It’s about creating environments where they feel understood, valued and able to communicate in the way that works best for them.

Such a lovely day celebrating my friend’s baby shower today 🐝💛

The cutest bee theme, lots of lovely food and plenty of fun! 🐝

It was also so nice to catch up with my friend and fellow SLT Ellie, Eleanor Hulme, Speech and Language Therapy who has just made the full leap into independent practice. Ellie was my ‘buddy’ when I first joined the NHS back in 2017, so it’s pretty funny that almost 10 years later we’re both working independently!

From NHS buddies to figuring out private practice together 😂💛
