Flush with success at Hazelgrove Court!

Residents and colleagues at Hazelgrove Court Care Home in Saltburn-by-the-Sea have officially twinned their toilet with a community in Tanzania after raising funds for Tearfundโ€™s Toilet Twinning initiative. ๐Ÿ’™

From a rather unusual scavenger hunt to putting their knowledge to the test with the Ready Set Flush quiz, everyone had plenty of fun while supporting an incredibly important cause.
The money raised will help communities access safe water, improved sanitation and vital hygiene education, things many of us can easily take for granted.

Resident Barry Taylor said: โ€œIt is great to have raised the money to twin our toilet as it helps those who are less fortunate than us.โ€

And the residents might not be stopping at just oneโ€ฆ Sheila Oโ€™Neill has suggested they twin all the toilets at Hazelgrove Court! ๐Ÿ‘

A fantastic effort from everyone involved. ๐Ÿ’š

We're so proud to share this fantastic achievement from our team at Aden View Care Home! ๐Ÿ’™

Together, residents' families, friends and staff walked 13 miles along the beautiful Northumberland coast, raising an incredible ยฃ1,860 (and counting!) for Dementia UK, far exceeding their original target.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved, and a special thank you to Hazel MacKay for organising such a wonderful community event. ๐Ÿ‘

"I cannot believe I have got to 86 and never seen anything like this." ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ’›

When Barry held a newly hatched duckling for the very first time, it was a moment of genuine joy.

At Hazelgrove Court Care Home, residents recently experienced the magic of watching ducklings hatch, thanks to Incredible Eggs. From sparking treasured memories of life on the farm to inspiring conversations about ballet and childhood, the tiny ducklings made a remarkable impact.

For many residents, especially those living with dementia, experiences like these are about so much more than an afternoon activity. They can reduce anxiety, encourage social interaction, stimulate memories, and bring comfort through simple moments of connection.

As one resident put it: "Just sitting and watching them really helps me to relax."

It's these moments, full of wonder, laughter and shared experiences, that remind us how meaningful person-centred activities can be in later life.

We're already looking forward to welcoming our feathered friends back next year! ๐Ÿฆ†

What simple experience has brought a smile to someone you know recently?

Everyone at Deangate Care Home is bursting with pride for our wonderful Activities Coordinator, Rachael Addy, who has completed THREE incredible fundraising challenges in just four weeks!

Abseiling down Liverpool FC's Anfield Stadium
Bungee jumping from Whitby's Larpool Viaduct
Climbing over London's iconic O2 Arena

Thanks to her courage and determination, Rachael has already raised ยฃ2,800 for our Residents' Activity Fund and BIADS Barnsley, helping to create unforgettable experiences for our ladies and gents while supporting people living with dementia.

This cause is deeply personal for Rachael following her mum Ann's recent Alzheimer's diagnosis.

Reflecting on her journey, Rachael said:
"Sometimes you have to put your trust in others, and that's exactly what our residents do every day. It can be frightening and full of uncertainty, but with the right support, anything is possible."

Our residents have loved following every step of her adventure, cheering her on before each challenge and celebrating her achievements afterwards. The money raised will help fund special trips, including visits to Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Cleethorpes, as well as new sensory equipment for our dementia community.

Home Manager Rachael Dawson said:
"Everyone at Deangate Care Home is incredibly proud of Rachael. What she has achieved is nothing short of inspiring. The difference this money will make to our residents' lives and wellbeing cannot be overstated."

If you'd like to support Rachael's incredible fundraising, there's still time to donate:

At 88 years old, Holmewood Care Home resident John Holehouse can still proudly recite his Army number from memory.

Despite living with dementia, John's memories of serving with the 1st King's Dragoon Guards during his National Service in Malaya remain remarkably vivid. From seeing the Taj Mahal after an unexpected stop in India to keeping a pet monkey that held his hand around camp, his stories offer a fascinating glimpse into a remarkable chapter of history.

This year marks 70 years since John's service, and thanks to his daughter Joanne bringing in his original service books and photographs, he has been able to relive those treasured memories with fellow residents and colleagues.

As a Veteran Friendly Framework care home, Holmewood are incredibly proud to celebrate veterans like John, ensuring their stories, sacrifices and achievements are recognised and remembered.

Thank you, John, and to all those who have served. โค๏ธ

Care Home Open Week 2026: What a Week to Remember! ๐ŸŽ‰

Last week, our homes proudly opened their doors to families, friends and local communities as part of Care Home Open Week, and what a fantastic celebration it was!

From welcoming local schoolchildren to watch football matches and hosting lively coffee mornings, to a special visit from the Mayor of Redcar at Hazelgrove Court.

Residents, relatives and colleagues came together to create memories and showcase the vibrant life within our homes.

The week was made even more special with wonderful entertainment, including a crowd-pleasing visit from an Elvis Presley tribute act who had everyone singing along and dancing in their seats at Lever Edge!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, supported our events and helped make Care Home Open Week such a success, including Ricco's Pizza who brought complimentary pizzas for the residents and colleagues at Deangate.

It was a fantastic week to celebrate the strong relationships we share with our local communities.

Here's to many more moments of friendship, fun and community spirit. ๐Ÿ’™
