Jo Kitts Yoga

Jo Kitts Yoga Private and public classes held in Chippenham, Marshfield and surrounding areas. Blending traditiona

I teach hatha yoga, the asana (movement) part of my classes tends to be slow(ish) moving and alignment focused. Classes can be challenging, stimulating, or soft and nurturing depending on the circumstances. A human biologist by training I take a pretty down to earth approach and I am particularly fascinated with the effects that the practices can have on our physiology in helping to maintain physi

cal integrity, support the immune system and calm the nervous system. I am also interested in yogic philosophy particularly relating the ancient teachings to modern day themes and the everday emotional challenges that touch us all at some point in our lives. Primarily I aim for my classes to be friendly, open and accessible to all - quite simply I want you to leave the room feeling better than you did when you came in!

Yesterday I taught my last Sunday morning zoom class 🥲

What started as a hasty and, frankly, terrifying way of keeping us practising together during those very odd early days of lockdown somehow carried on for more than six years.

After our last class, two lovely students sent me their memories of those Sunday mornings and I thought I'd share them, because they brought back so much I'd completely forgotten.

One went back to the journal she kept throughout Covid and found these entries:

24 March 2020
“At 6.30 Jo K broadcast a 10 minute meditation over Facebook. It took a while to get on board but made it just in time. It was a very welcome, calming session. ‘Be well, be safe, be at ease’.”

26 March 2020
“Booked two yoga classes to be delivered over Zoom – interesting!”

29 March 2020
“Today we had our first ‘proper’ yoga session with Jo – ‘Self Care Sunday’ over Zoom – it was excellent. A little more demanding than what I was expecting but that’s good! Around 20 people joined in. We were muted during class but could hear and see everyone as they joined and left the class.”

She went on to say:
“I remember that we were so impressed that you rose to the challenge so successfully. Your yoga sessions offered a bright light during such a grim time.

Thank you for instilling in us the discipline of practising yoga twice a week.”

Another student remembered those early days too:

“I remember those early days when screens froze, sound disappeared or Zoom just failed to turn up and tune in, but our little community came together and carried on and on and on.
In those first few weeks I would lie on my mat with a shallow, racing breath and heart pounding. By the end of the hour I would feel calm, more settled and know it would be OK.

How things have changed. I now come to the mat and feel a sense of ‘ahhh, this is for me’. I have learnt so much about myself and my body and can't thank you enough. THANK YOU.

I'm so looking forward to joining you in person for another adventure.”

I can't quite believe how many Sunday mornings we've shared since that first one in March 2020. I'm going to miss this loyal little group, but it does feel like the right time to finish. And with the studio opening, hopefully there will be plenty more opportunities to unroll our mats together – sometimes even in the same room!

Thank you to everyone who's been part of it. 💚

The final week of term brought us to Lammas (or Lughnasadh), the first harvest of the year.

It's the time when plants and trees stop reaching for the light and begin to bear fruit and seed. Rather than continuing to strive for growth, they simply offer what has already been cultivated.

In Western culture we're conditioned to believe that happiness lies just beyond where we are now - after the next promotion, the next purchase or the next milestone. It's easy to become so focused on what's next that we forget to notice what is already here.

This season invites something different. It encourages us to pause, to recognise the abundance that already exists in our lives, and to practise gratitude for all that has quietly grown.

Rather than always reaching for more, let's rest, just for a while, in the fullness of summer 🌻.

This week all of my classes have focused on somatics.

Somatics is a little different from yoga. Rather than being interested in the shape we're making on the outside, it's primarily a practice for the nervous system. Our attention turns inwards, towards sensation, awareness and the perception of our own internal landscape.

Using small, slow, floor-based movements, we explore how little effort is actually needed to create meaningful change. There's no striving, no pushing, no trying to stretch further. Instead, we invite the body to soften, notice and respond.

With this continuing hot weather, it feels like the perfect practice 💛.

It's finally time to share a secret I've been keeping...

After years of hiring beautiful venues from other people, Wise, Wild & Well has found its forever home 🥹. This September I'll be opening the doors to my very own studio. This honestly is a dream come true.

My vision is that this is a space where the moment you step through the door, you take a deep exhale and your shoulders soften. A place to slow down, breathe deeply, knowing that for a little while at least, there’s nothing else you need to do, and nowhere else you need to be.

Alongside some regular yoga classes, the studio will become home to longer workshops, creative gatherings and unhurried mornings or afternoons with tea, homemade cake and excellent company.
It is nestled in the countryside, just 15 minutes from Chippenham and 8 minutes from Calne, but it feels a world away from the pace and pressures of everyday life.

There's a lot to do between now and September - it's going to be a busy summer bringing this little dream to life 😬😆. I'd love for you to follow along Wise, Wild & Well I share the journey, the inevitable ups and downs, and the first glimpses of the studio taking shape.
